Great video as always, wonder what the operating temperature of the flexable shaft being so close to the engine?

He mentions in the video that it's an "aerospace spec" drive. I reckon it'll be just fine in that case, we use similar drives adjacent to engines running at 700C+

Ta, it does have a protective shroud to it which will protective alot by the temperature. Wonder what it is made of, to have the torsional strength while keeping the flexibility is impressive!

That alternator setup is not what I was expecting. Very clever.

I particularly like the crank pulley end sliding tensioner arrangement and the choice of a toothed belt, more elegant than a BBC costume drama.

As for the flexi drive, I know it was mentioned that it is aero quality but is that from a helecopter or a plane? One of them, as we have sadly seen only very recently crashes a lot more than the other.... just saying.

It has got to nearly be time for paint or are you going to vinyl wrap it to look like a box of PG-Tips?

Lots to do yet? Fuel? Cooling? Dash?

I keep watching this and in the back of my mind there's an evil thought of "what if they stack it on the test drive?" All those hand made components....

Cooling and fuel were sorted quite early on.

I genuinely hope it works perfectly, but I am a bit concerned about it's ability to handle the power required by an alternator and A/C unit, in particular the transient torque loads it will experience when the engine is changing speed quickly since alternator rotors are pretty heavy. As usual the execution was a work of art, it's easy to see how many thousands of hours have gone into the mini already.

Indeed. It will be pretty much priceless when complete considering the hours required to re-create it.

I guess fuel pump, rail, injectors etc will all be relatively straight forward.

What kind of power can you get from a 3SGTE these days with a decent front mount intercooler and a small-ish hybrid turbo? 350bhp?

This thing is going to be crazy fast!

I would imagine the alternator is fitted with a one way pulley so it freewheels down when the engine slows suddenly.

The overrun clutch/bearing for alternators is part of the pulley, but the pulley and drive flange that BOM turned up looks to be solid. Looking at the prices these things cost (eye watering) they must be reasonably confident it will work.

Excellent video and work. I always have trouble waiting for the next episodes.

I'm not sure about the flexible drive to the alternator. I would have thought that the alternator axis doesn't need to be parallel to the ground. Somehow I would be more comfortable with a simple bend instead of an S-bend in the flexible drive, or am I missing something?

Great episode. I wonder how they are going to make the micra door panels and original dash look nice? Leather upholstered?

I assume too that they’ll be using all-new switches and heater controls.

They are going well beyond anything I’d expect in a Mini 🤣
