My wife owns 2016(65 plate) Mini Cooper and it currently has 13000 miles on it. On startup a warning on the dash says service 1000 miles. Looking into the menu this is telling us the rear pads need changing in 1000 miles at the latest. The car was serviced a month ago and the rear pads were 5 mm. Turns out the sensor is set to go with still 4mm of pad remaining which in my understanding is way too early. Not impressed Mini!

Is it the sensor or just the service indicator?

Reset the service indicator and carry on if possible.

4mm really isn't a lot of brake pad. And the pad with the sensor on it may not be the most worn on the axle.

If Mini have set a 1,000 mile reminder at 4mm I'd say that was actually pretty sensible.

The wear sensor is on one pad on one wheel only. 3 other pads could be lower. Was the warning triggered by the wear sensor or just the elapsed miles? Both will trigger the warning.

In my case the wear indicator (locater o/s rear) didn't trigger a warning light. I booked the car in as there was an ominous grumble from the rear and it turned out that the n/s rear had worn through the brake material and was metal to metal with the disc. Result was new pads and discs, 4 days after Christmas... The tech told me there was about 1500 miles left on the o/s. I raised a complaint with mini/bmw as i thought that was a pretty large discrepancy between the 2 sides and there would be plenty of people willing to keep driving with defective brakes until the indicator illuminated. Was given some flannel about the system working as it should, but there would need to be more reports raised as PUMA cases through the dealers before anything would be reviewed. Consider this time to shop around and get the pads done at your leisure. I changed the fronts myself as soon as the warning illuminated at about 32k.

I had this issue on my 328i after 18000 miles. It went in for a service at BMW and they reset the software in the car (so they said) and the mileage countdown went from 1200 to 18000.

I had a local garage check the pads and they said the new countdown was more realistic.

Pads on the F56 are thin its not un usual for them to go on the rears first the car brakes the rear wheels on Corning & if you use cruise control

I would check the inner pads too as some have come acropper when they thought all was good but the pads have worn more on the inner sides of the discs.
