Yes, you can use the 11 stud head as a template to drill and tap the block for the extra stud. Very easy to do.

It's either 9 stud block or an 11 stud block (or more correctly a 10 stud block + a single bolt).

You can fit an 11 stud head onto a 9 stud block with out any problem. You don't need to use the two extra fixings - just leave them off unless you're a purist

The necessity for the two extra fixings (used on higher compression performance versions - Cooper S and 1300GT) is questionable. The later A+ high compression/big valve heads reverted to 9 studs and never gave a problem.

If the gasket is going to fail it's usually between cylinders 2 & 3 (where the head and block gets very hot due to the siamesed exhaust port and side by side exhauts valves)
