Saw a great original Mini Pickup the other day, in black with a central exhaust. The sound and the fact that its a bit different made me really want one.
What are they like?
Did Rover ever make one, like they did the original Mini?

Exceptionally rare and greatly loved by just about everyone and even more so by Mini nuts.

15,000 produced in total, not sure how many remain but it cant be many.

Always on the lookout for one.

Do they always have the central exhaust?
I was thinking about fitting a cooper engine, but I like to keep cars very original, do you think thats a good option or not?

Pick ups are available, just look for the rust in the usual mini places, lots have been played with so you may find one with a engine that’s suits you already in place, they don’t have centre exhausts as standard but like all old mini bits the aftermarket extras are available very cheaply.

i've never liked them - love the van though.

My mate sold its immaculate 1980 pick-up just a few months ago after spending £2k on it then £3k restoring it, then didn't let it out of the garage for 3 years

The van is nice, so is the Traveler, they would both probably be more practical too but my hearts set with a pickup now.

I love my Pick Up, will probably never sell it, although it does not really get used too much. See attached pic that Miniman hosted a while back for another thread.

Fortunately I finished mine before prices went up, so I could probably make a profit! Front end panels are original, inside its as per Mk2 Cooper (although with Rover seats), its a 998 with a Maniflow ST1 kit.

I had one which I restored few years ago. It was one of the very last ones and was registered after the last one came off the line in, I think, 1982. One owner from new - IBM Ltd. Mine had done a genuine 40000 when I got it, but the bed was rusty so it was changed. The only non-original thing was the white cab roof on the dark blue body.
'Rougeleo' has it now and has found a removeable fibreglass top for it. I guess he's had it almost 3 years now and has done quite a few miles in it.

i used to run one as an every day car for a couple of years, and it took a lot of abuse, the engine froze solid one winter, and popped a core plug, so i stuck it back in, then a few weeks later it fell out, and the engine over heated, but i was late for work so i kept going until it siezed on me. that night after work i went back with a mate, popped the core plug back in, filled it up with water , started it up, and drove home in it!
it kept going for another year before the rust was too bad, and i sold it on for £50 (not bad considering i only paid £90 for it!)
one draw back of vans and pickups if they have the original front end is that grill is fixed, and it makes access to the engine a bit more difficult.

I agree. I had to remove the alternator in order to unscrew a stubbon oil filter recently. Is it possible to "cut out" the original van grill and replace it with a removable one?

When another mate restored his van the original front panel was too rotten to keep, bur the grille part was ok. He used a new standard mini front panel, but with the van grille cut out of the old front panel and held on with ordinary quick release grille fasteners. It works well - best of both worlds, van looks with saloon accesibility.

Yeah a number of people cut the front grille out and replace it with a Cooper style job.

I like both looks to be honest but the accessibility wins through I suppose.

What i meant was that he has the grille part from the rotten van pannel cut out and attached to the saloon style front panel, so it looks like a van , but the grille can come off like a saloon.

Smart idea.

Beware, some pick ups are home converted vans/travellers etc. Agree that they look "cool" though. There I go talking like a 16 yer old now and me 52!
