Thank you very much, I am a fan of yours also! wink

UPDATE! **

Fitted my airhorns today, finally got round to doing it, took out the old wiring for the spotlights, and replaced the relay and fitted my airhorns. They are extremely loud! Anyone who cuts me up or jumps out in front of me is going to get a blast!

Keep me updated, don't let me forget! I've got lots of pics of your beast located on one of my hard drives somewhere! smile

Hey all, I have been busy spending money on my pocket rocket! Spent a few bob on ebay, including a Smiths Dual Oil and Water Temp gauge

and also an unleaded head!

What do you think? Is it worth getting the head gass flowed? Or making an modifications to the head?

Its a Cam 4810 to go on my 850.

I am also currently buying a Cooper Freeflow and alloy inlet manifold.

Tom.

Hi all,

Having a few problems at the moment. Took her down to my friends workshop to be timed with a strobe light. I couldnt manage to move the dizzy at all! It had seized to the block somehow. Disappeared into the workshop for a little while and decided I wouldnt be beaten, Rockeze did the trick. Absolutely amazing solution! Timed the dizzy to factory standard setting, and put the points back on. She doesnt like the electronic igniton, as soon as you press the accelerator she doesnt rev, just knocking noises from the block! So put the points back on, I suspect the coil to be honest, will be purchasing a new standard coil.

The problems don't stop there, driving home, she is full of flat spots, wont go, it feels as if the engine is restricted, rocking back and forth :dontgetit: I am also rocking in my seat to, eager to go! I had to pull over several times to let people past. I decided the timing wasnt correct and unbolted the distributer and tried timing it by ear. Whatever position the dizzy was put in, I still had the same problem. So now I'm thinking, it isnt the timing at fault and I've just buggered my nicely timed dizzy. So that will have to be done again. I suspect the carb is the problem, need to fit the jet and tweak it in the hope of it running right :dontgetit:

Does the float chamber have to be at a certain angle?

Somehow, I need to get the Mini setup by my own accord on the drive. Need a timing gun!

So I am currently unable to use my mini!

  • In what way could I play with the head? Does the unleaded head give any performance?
Tom

Video, hear the flatspot? Could it be fuel related?

I am certainly no help on the mechanical side, hand me a lap top and I am away. biggrin

I would get the engine tuned, despite the displacement the 850 should tune well with a ported inlet etc. With a correctly tuned carb it should a be a flying machine too.

A great thread there! I can't believe I missed it!

Your Mini looks lovely, a real credit to you.

smile

The unleaded head should give you pretty much the same performance as before. To get a little more I would port and polish it to improve gas flow, that would be a good start.

Not sure what could be causing the flat spots throughout the rev range. Obviously the first thing to look at would be the timing and ignition as that is what you were last working on. Check the plug gaps to make sure they have opened up too much, and check the leads, coil and dizzy etc.

Have you run the tank low? You may have picked up some crud from the tank.

Good luck with her though.

Thank you for the feedback and the kind words!

Im guessing the flat spots might be the plugsbeing too open. I opened them to 0.0032" \thou for the electronic igniton. However she does not like the E.I and doesnt rev with it on? Just horrible knocking noises from the engine! Carb has just been refurbished and set up nicely, will get the emissions done pretty soon.

What am I polishing on the head then? Am I able to do it with fine wet and dry with my fingers?

Its 1 step forward and 2 steps back. She is smoking quite abit, can smell oil in the smoke I think. She sounds as if she is running on 3 cylinders. Bad misfire. Cant use her, again when I need heer the most,

Intermittent problem, comes and goes, what is it that works one day and doesnt the next?

Not a happy bunny tbh!

The next port of call after the ignition system checks is fuel, check for split hoses and the condition of your pump for a consistant supply.

After that its compression test and leak down checks for head gasket and / or piston rings etc.

Could be a good oportunity for some old school home brew tuning? Sorted 850's are supposed to be quite potent and very revvey.

Yes you're correct, the 850's are the free revving engines. I was thinking head gasket also, and valve seals... The cars running rough at the moment. Foot down and nowt happens then suddenly picks up. Engine picks up but the speed doesnt tend to!

aha, you might have hit the nail on the head. Should the engine note change when he vacuum advance is taken off?

Yes, it should drop (if your running vacuum advance). You says its your 'leccy ignition? Odly enoguh this is what seemed to trigger mine going too, so i changed to the new dizzy and left the points system in.

I took the advance lead off the vacuum and the engine note stayed the same...the points are on. What does that suggest?

Id say the advance mechanism is dead then- its prings and a conterweight IIRC, and they do wear, I spent ages looking for it, changing various components, untill while i was trying to retime it, wherever i put the dizzy it made no difference. I think a replacement dizz is needed, unless you fancy rebuilding the advance, i tihnk its civerd in the Haynes...

I'll get the haynes out and have a look! I removed the housing from the dizzy and took the arm off the pin, gave it a good wiggle and re-attatched it, made no difference. Might have my dizzy out and try overhauling it at some stage.

Yeah, i tihnk it is possible to overhaul them, but it depends how badly messed up it is. Just your luck that it happens on the one day that TMF is offline!

I know! Terrible isnt it! I share my time between both forums anyway and there is a wealth of experience on here rather than the odd few funny reples you get on TMF...
