It was another successful show the Southern Mini Owners Club put on this year at the Hop farm in Paddock Wood, Kent. It has become tradition for Southern Mini Days to have a theme, this year it was school days.

Friday night saw the evening kick off with a mini fashion show, outfits designed with minis in mind were submitted then shown off on the catwalk, some people also entered in their school outfits. The show was sponsored by PistonHeads.com, Lava (produce mini clothing) and Mark Johnston (Johno). The show had prizes for the top ten entrants, I myself got a Pistonheads heads cap and 5 bottles of beer, which I am very pleased with.

Friday night finished off with karaoke, some were very good, others were rather painful but all had a good time. After the karaoke the alcohol continued to flow back at the tents until well into the early hours, Johno’s only complaint was that the burger van had closed at 12 and there were no kebab shops (I’ll suggest it to the club for next year).

Being woken up at 6 am by minis moving around wasn’t really ideal but after a shower I began to fell human again and able to managed the full English breakfast at the local cafe. After our visit to the cafe it was time to get back to the days activities, Jez Avery put on a Mountain Bike stunt show, jumping members of the crowd then a rather nice 4x4 mini, next there was giant sumo wrestling and various club games.

The events continued in the day with the likes of the loudest exhaust competition, tank crushing, a school outing was organised in the afternoon for a cruise around the Kent countryside.

On Saturday night the evening set off with school dinners, sausage and mash followed by semolina pudding after which contestants played the game show Mini Fortunes (based on family fortunes), the school party was next and a good excuse to dress up in school uniform, although headmaster kept a eye out to make sure there was no petting on the dance floor the DJ was excellent with sound and lighting that wouldn’t have been out of place in a decent club.

Sunday was similar format to Saturday with more displays, the final of the club games, show and shine and awards for the top 40 minis.

Attendance was good with over 50 trade stands, and an estimated 1000+ cars.

Thanks go to all those who attended making it a fun weekend, and huge thanks to Ted for sponsoring the fashion show.

that sounds great I wish I had been there! I wonder if there are any northern or midlands mini meets coming up?

Is that the MiniWorld action day with the ludicrously cheap track price?

Definitely. I live 5 minutes from Castle Combe. Anyone travelling long distances is more than welcome to crash at my place and / or do any "emergency repairs".

Yep, same format as the one I’ve organised for the classic and sports car day, if you attend with a club you get in free and get 1 free track pass to be used before 11, after that track time can be bought at £18-20, for 5 laps.

Is it in October?

May well be up for that as its a brief jaunt down the M4 for me.

MITP first though. Fatboy, are you going as you must be local...

17th August.

Just outside Woodstock, Oxon.

Looks like quite a big one from what I have seen.

I went last year, it was pretty big with quite a bit of trade so ideal for getting bits and pieces. The only thing was in previous years we’ve had to park miles away, ok until I decided to get 4 new tyres.

Thats the reason I am going, hoping to get a decent saving on quite a lot of bits.

However with pram taking up boot completely and baby taking up passenger seat completely and 'er indoors in the back I am not sure how I am going to get it all home. I refuse to use a roofrack!

Last year's MITP was OK - there were certainly a good number of trade stands. But I found that I had seen everything within a couple of hours. Perhaps it will be different being part of a club stand instead of just being a visitor...

That’s why I’m doing a lot less shows this year, as it always the same cars, same stuff, London to Brighton was a great buzz the first couple of times but now its lost its appeal a bit.

I've not been to a Mini show since the first Showdown in '96.

On the whole I am quite looking forward to it!

I'll be there definately.

Will probably get my bro along as well - we picked up his 2000 Sportpack cooper last weekend, so he's well chuffed with it.

Should we put a thread up in Events/Meetings for MITP?

Gutted I couldn't make SMD, I'll have to make a big effort for next year's.
