1979 "t" 1.0 automatic leyland mini with 12000 genuine miles from new, also 1 registered keeper from new, i still have the original (1979) log book, receipts etc, garaged for around 15 years now if not more and not been driven either. engine starts on the button, engine bay is mint not a spec of dirt, as is interior spotless like its never been sat in. exterior very clean and tidy, a tiny spot of rust at the bottom of both front wings but not enough to make me say the cars not mint.

i was planning on dropping my metro turbo engine in after its rebuild but am now umming and arring about whether to or not. a big contributing factor will be the value of the car, if its worth a bit and someone wants it as is, then it should be kept standard and put away again, if its not worth much and nobody wants it i should drop my engine in and modify it slightly

what do you all think???? all advice appreciated!!!

Jon, it sounds like a lovely car.
I would be tempted to keep it as it is, it will certainly have more value that way, as if you mod it you'll lose a lot of the value attributed by its age and condition.
Without seeing it I would guess a value of c.£3000, perhaps a little more as the auto is extremely rare. Really, though, it's worth what someone will pay (now that's me stating the bloody obvious again!).

If you plan on dropping a manual A-series in then you will have to replace the engine, subframe and gearbox complete due to the different engine mounting points.

I'd be tempted to restore and keep it as it is. An 8000 mile Mini 25 was sold at auction 3 weeks ago for over £9K!

Depends on what you want out of it? Do you want it for cherishing and keeping original, or modifying and playing around in? To make it manual like plotless said, got to chage the whole front subframe etc.

If you want a different car, try and sell it to a collector/enthuisast and get a manual one.

Sorry to state the obvious, but it's worth what-ever someone will give you for it. If you're selling and you find someone who wants it as-is then fine. If not then it's not a particularly unusual model even if the condition is exceptional. You could try ringing someone like Bristol Minis and asking them what it's worth.

On the project front, the ERA mini turbo's used the auto front sub as well as a bulkhead box to allow the turbo to fit. If you want you can use the auto subframe and re-drill the engine mount holes in the correct place for a manual. Otherwise you have to change the front sub. Are you sure you want a turbo ?? Speak to Avonbar or Minispeed about options/kits/upgrades/refurbed parts.

ok its for sale need room in the garage at my mums and i need to sell my astra as its now really boring me to death instead of the old just boring me...anyway its goin for 2,700ono it'll have 12 months mot as soon as i get a chance to take it to the garage. if anyone is interested contact me at gtejon@hotmail.com

Actually I've heard of using the Auto subframe when dropping the MG Metro turbo engine in, as the engine sits lower, giving more clearance for the turbo...

On the subject of automatic Minis, has anyone got any gearbox output shafts for an early auto they will sell me?
I really need a pair by mid-December to finish off a job I'm doing.
No rush to let me know as I'm away until 24th Nov (in speed-camera free Florida!)

Car WAS going really well until I got into it with my girlfriend the other day and she said to me "Whats happened to your door" and i said "I dont know WHAT has happened to my door"
Remember that rust along the bottom, well in all that rain the spray from the road took the paint off along the bottom and put a nice hole in it.
Got to decide now whether to re-skin it or just try and get another door.
So its off the road again for now until I decide what to do with it.
But the most annoying thing is the fact I have a spare car purely because my main car is a mini but whenever i want to use it again something happens to it, last month was a cooling pipe and now it is a pissed guy driving down the road crashed into one car and to escape the people that came running out reversed into the front of mine ripping front bumper off.
I could fix it but would rather just wait for his insurance company and courtesy car.
So at the moment I'm driving another courtesy car from the 307 accident when a lorry wheel tried to kill me!!
Not the best year i have had with cars!

I have a very rare 1966 auto which I am turning into a "Twinnysprint", that means 2 engines, 4WD and a body and roof chop like the old racers, totally period. I will have all the Hydrolastic subframes and auto stuff available if anyone wants it in January. Auto minis are rare and my 850 was a special order (VERY RARE). However people hate them, they don't go like a mini should but I suggest that you whack it on ebay and say you will ship anywhere. The Americans love auto stuff and you should make a fortune. Put an ad on miniclassic.co.uk and minispares.com/msgthreads and get people knowing when you do ebay it.
