Just had a great day out at Langdale Quest (www.langdalequest.co.uk/) off roading. There's about 50 miles of gravel / mud / water in 10,000 acres of forest to play in with instruction to hand if you're bit of a novice like myself. On arrival you get a quick safety briefing from the very friendly staff, do a quick bit of paperwork, and your off!

This is the second time i've been, but the first with Katy (LR Def 90 50th Anniversary 4.0 V8 Auto). The last time I rented one of the staff Suzuki's, which performed very well even in two feet of mud!

Katy of course performed flawlessly . We cruised there at around the NSL(+) caravans permitting. We went through mud, ruts, pools, and two 1:3!!! descents and one 1:3 ascent. The ascent was fun, she just dug in and climbed all the way up. The descent . As if a 1:3 gradient is not bad enough on about the last third there are a series of cross axleing bomb holes that throw you around all over the place and (on a lesser vehicle of course, who said jeep?) threaten to lose your traction. All I could do was breathe again and say 'good girl' as she brought me safely down.

Some pictures of my dirty girl...

The second is at the foot of a 1:3 climb...

Fantastic day out all in all

aaah those pictures are nostalgic....muddy landies

First time you've ever been at the top of a 1:3 descent, put it in low box and taken your feet off everything?

My first time was a moment I'll never forget

Katy looks lovely, right at home, good to hear you're enjoying her

Nice one!

I've just bought a Disco 2001 V8 from Guy Salmon - I pick it up this weekend, and am looking forward to a bit of off road fun stomping through the mud.

I went to the motor show on Thursday last week and was taken around the Landie test track at the factory. Wow - unbelieveable off road performance. HDC is a real test of faith though - I was a bit the first time, but it's all under control.

Am looking to have it LPG'd - Any thoughts anyone?

Yeah, don't go to an installer in ARUNdel who does AUTOGAS. We took our '99 Disco to him and had nothing but bother with it and him. I think that the kit was new and they didn't know it that well, but after taking £2600 of us, on the 3rd problem he told me my car was a load of crap and not to bother him again.
Nice.

Cheers for the advice!

I actually looked at them this AM as I live in Hove. Spoke to a company in Horsham who seem to know their stuff, so will likely go with them.

Is that AFS in Slinfold mate?
I have heard good things about them. Ours would have gone to them to get sorted but we took it back to Mclaren, the manufacturer of the kit.
All is hunky dory now but we are going to change to a Td5 Disco very soon as the wife has been using my Td5 90 and reckons she was spending more on gas (if she could bloody find it!!!) than she has spent on diesel.
I would say check out the stations that have it first. I live in East Grinstead and there is only one, the BP. It breaks down alot so we have to go to Horsham which is a 50 mile round trip. With only 55 usable litres and a range of 150-170 miles it makes the trip uneconomical.
The whole LPG thing has left a bad taste in my mouth unfortunately and has proved to be a waste of money.

Hope thats not too negative.

Good luck....

Ta again...

Have been doing some basic sums, and all in all it just doesn't add up.

The cost of the conversion is 2100 + VAT. I reckon at around 14000 miles per annum that means a pay back of 2.4 years if you use LPG *ALL* the time....

+ the LPG bit invalidates the Land Rover warranty on the engine, so all in all I think we'll just stick to petrol....

Smiffy - just checked out your home page. Top class job on the Scooby! One thing that bothers me - wheres the "country lane" in Hove !?!

Ha! The lane was the road that goes north to Devil's Dyke from the junction with the A27.

If you follow the road for about 1/2 a mile you go down a plunging hill and then through a left hander, then a straight then a small right hander and then a nasty, nasty off camber left hander which was precisely where I ran out of talent
