Date of manufacture/Series Landy

Does anyone know how to establish the date of manufacture from the VIN plate/chassis number on a Series Land Rover?
Ford have an easy letter system, any chance that Rover did the same (I'll swap anyone interested!)

And yes it's so I can find out if an early '73 S3 could be tax exempt, without using Gaydon, although I realise I'll need to get written confirmation fromm them.
