A new purchase which has just arrived - a pre-Defender 90 V8 CSW - a factory car which needs a bit of TLC to bring it back to life. The (considerable) history shows much care has ben spent on looking after it with electric fans, new doors and regular servicing. But it has a fuel leak, an exhaust leak and needs a good compounding and a tune up.

Very nice!I previously had one of those, best thing about them was the super strong LT85 gearbox, which was only ever fitted to Genuine V8 models.
Sadly sold mine on to someone I know who still uses it today, and the V8 runs as sweet as the day it was new too.
Enjoy yours, and let’s see the pictures of getting her back to 100% too.

Thanks - Didn't know about the gearbox - one of the first things I plan on doing is swapping the transfer box to get a bit better cruising out of it.
Not sure about getting a stainless sports exhaust, or just sticking a standard one on it.
Factory V8’s should be running a tall transfer box as standard. It’s a somewhat unique ratio 1.1:1 or similar. It isn’t the regular 1.4:1 from the diesel models or the Disco spec 1.2:1Not sure about getting a stainless sports exhaust, or just sticking a standard one on it.
A standard carb V8 will probably not like even taller gearing. Stock top speed is probably flat out in 4th with 5th as a cruising gear. Is the engine running SU’s or Stromberg carbs?
An LT-85 is easy to spot. They normally are half silver and half black and split half way along. Gates are also very wide on them, ie the gearstick throw is much more than an LT-77/R380.

I fitted a full sports stainless system to mine, worth it just for the noise! Not sure about getting a stainless sports exhaust, or just sticking a standard one on it.
Getting the headers to fit is a son of a bh job though!
I do miss the sound of the V8, but the Td5 we have now is perfect for,our off road school because of all the deep water sections we have.

That’s just the thing. Can you remember where you got the system?

The build of my 64 Series 2A has progressed well over the last few weeks. I have rebuilt the engine and installed it with gearbox that I refurbished last year. It runs very smoothly and sounds good. Clutch was bled today and it works as does the gearbox.
Wiring has been fitted and checked through over the last couple of weeks and everything works. I have used a spare dash panel for the fitting out rather than the refurbished original, hence the tie wraps holding it in place purely as a temporary measure.
Next job is to bleed the brakes and drive it around the paddock before fitting the bodywork. Getting closer to going back on the road!

Mine was bought almost in kit form, having been taken apart and then readied for sale by the vendor due to a change of plans. Axles, bulkhead and tub were just about attached to the chassis and the rest was loose in a container!
Work began in January 2018 but pressure of work limited my time on the project in mid summer. It's moving along well now though. Half the fun is finding new old stock spares or retaining and refurbishing original parts.
