We are looking at a D4 at the weekend at a main dealer. A 59 plate GS. I keep reading various 'horror stories' about the reliability of Discoveries. Just interested in members views on this?

Hahahahaha.... It's the Internet, of course you're going to get horror stories!! hehe

How many threads have you ever seen started with: "Hey, I've got car x and I've never had a problem..."??? biggrin

I'd want a solid warranty on it. D3 and D4 don't do too well on the warranty direct reports.

Worth having a read on the d3 owners forums. Plenty of info on there smile

I admit that I'm not an owner, but I've been researching a D3/D4 for a while. I'm sure I'll take the plunge eventually ...

We have a 60-plate at 30k miles that is coming up to the end of the manufacturers warranty. We've owned it from 'new' (couple of months old).

To date, under warranty we've had:

- New upper tailgate switch
- New suspension compressor
- New drivers side rear shock to due failed rubber boot letting dust in and scoring the shock
- New steering UJ which seized
- New suspension height switch x 2
- Maybe some other things that I can't remember

I'm just about to get a local specialist indie to do a pre warranty service and inspection and MOT and then throw whatever is left at the main dealer to fix under warranty. We'll probably keep the car for another 6mths-1yr so will look for a standalone warranty (got a lead on the Disco4.com forum). And the next car will be .... another Disco 4 because the Boss drives it and likes it despite these foibles.

I'm on my second D4 and probably going to order my third shortly, they have been the most reliable cars I have owned, only time they have been in the garage apart from services was for a compressor on my last one smile

My mate loves his. Only niggles have been EGR valves replaced under warranty.
He's gone through a fair few tyres but it does get used off road!
yikes

I owned an 06/56 D3 from new for 4 years/42,000 miles. Other than standard servicing and 1 set of disc's and pads, it had 1 a rear parking sensor replaced under warranty. I sold it to a fellow Ph'er who is still enjoying the car.

This was replaced by a new April 2010 D4 which I sold in Sept at 3.5 years/33,000 miles. It only required standard servicing during my ownership.

I wish my Audi and Porsche Cayenne had been as reliable as the Land Rovers.

IMHO, the Disco 4 is the best Swiss Army Knife of cars you can buy.

We've had our D4 for about 15 months now and had nothing, not one thing go wrong at all. It's a fantastic bit of Kit and (dare I say it) if I had to choose between it and my Range Rover I'd probably keep the D4 (Runs off to wash his mouth out with Soap)

I've had my D3 for 8 months and 13k miles, from 78k to 91k. It's had an EGR valve (dealer warranty) and a parking sensor (£60-odd). After the miles it's done it has some worn wishbone bushes which the warranty is about to take care of, paying-off 2/3 of the cost of the 3 year policy I took out.

As with any complex vehicle, a good warranty is a very smart idea.

It's a fantastic piece of kit.

My dad has had a D3 and now a D4, both ran up to 80k. So far the only problem was a faulty bluetooth module.

I had a 2007 D3 well looked after with low miles ... cost me a fortune to keep on the road. More than my other three cars combined. I would never get another discovery

The D4 is a better and more reliable car than the D3. Mine is 2 years old with over 30k on the clock and the only problem I have had is a frozen screen, which was replaced under warranty. There is the odd rattle and squeak when cold, but as an all round family/towing car it is the best I've had by some distance. I know some have suffered reliability problems with early D4 and D3, but mine has been as reliable as any audi, merc or BMW I've previously owned.
