Discovery 3 Gear Box Fault
Discussion
Hoping someone can help.
My mate has a Discovery 3 with an Auto gear box, and he says that periodically, but becoming more frequent, the car seems to slip out of gear whilst moving, he describes it by saying if it was a manual, he would say the clutch is slipping.
I drive an S Type Jag which has the same 2.7 V6 engine, and I know that a lot of Jag gear box problems (fitted with a so say sealed for life gear box, but most know it needs an oil change to extend the gear box life) seem to do with oil, change the oil and the problem disappears. I appreciate that although the engine block is the same in my Jag, the gear box will be very different.
Can anyone offer any suggestions to if an oil change may help, or is this problem more serious?
Any help appreciated.

Autos are full of clutches - and will slip just like a manual as if you were riding the clutch and with the same result - burning of the friction material.
Cause could be many things, but avoid allowing it to slip as you are burning the oil and filling the internals up with friction material.

If it is jumping out of gear (ie. it goes from drive into neutral) it's probably the gear linkage as they seize up over time and need a grease. Does the selector slide back and forth easily?
If it doesn't actually slip out of gear, try a gearbox oil flush and some Dr Tranny shudder guard. Best place to ask questions is here: http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/technical-d3-vf2.htm...
Just to add - the gearboxes are not sealed for life, the oil will be well and truly knackered by 100k miles and this will make the box misbehave.

This exactly, several documented cases of a gearbox flush and Dr. Tranny solving problems with the gearboxes. If it doesn't actually slip out of gear, try a gearbox oil flush and some Dr Tranny shudder guard. Best place to ask questions is here: http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/technical-d3-vf2.htm...
