I've seen a few pics across the internet but does anyone have any insight into when it will arrive and what engine choices it might offer? I'm hoping for a V8 but I'm braced for something less .

This is a car I'm waiting for but understand there's limited info out there other than rumours. No spy shots and only concept images are out there.

I would expect standard engines to be the 4 cyl ingenium petrol and diesel 2.0l lumps. Off the back of G wagen AMG popularity and twisted etc defenders it would make sense to produce a SVR version which might use either the supercharged V8 from the RRS SVR or the newer 3.0 V6.

Rumours suggest it will be based on the D4 platform and my gut feel is it will get the 4cyl engines and if they have any common sense they should also launch with a petrol hybrid.

If it is based on the D4 platform, then that might explain why we don't see any prototypes.

I'm also hoping that LR will finally see sense and lauch with a double cab pick up. They have missed that boat too many times.

The 'old' Defender was available with a double-cab pickup in both 110 and 130 variants.

Why would JLR replace the Defender? Surely in all their major target markets it would harm the brand to be associated with a commercial/utility vehicle?

I doubt it. Certainly does no harm for the likes of Mercedes now does it.

That said, I very much doubt the new Defender will be a utility vehicle (sadly!!!). I think it will be a blinged up lifestyle vehicle just using the Defender name to sell vehicles. And if JLR are anything to go buy, it'll just be another rehash of their currently ugly styling, but in a different size with a different price. As that is exactly how the Jag, Range Rover and Disco lines are currently setup.

One look, you just pay a bigger price for the bigger vehicle.

Correct and they were outsold by the L200, Navara, Amorak. People want refinement these days.

If LR get it right they could really shake up the door bike cab market.

I've said this before, but I've been told that the new defender will be based on the D4 platform, but won't know for certain until it breaks cover. I'm hoping it will be next year with sales starting in 2019.

I'll lease one if the price is right.

Looking forward to the release. I've watched the last two Land Rover reveals live 😀

Speaking to a JLR guy, it will be considerably more expensive than a discovery sport due to the platform it's based on. Will be available in 90, 110 & 130 equivalents. The 130 will be a 110 with larger over hangs. It is a MY20 model so available in 2019.
