Tried the stick. It didn’t work was already moving freely. Garage ordered new fan dash now off to replace.
Keys now playing up too
Two weeks ago it was a tailgate strut
This car just keeps on giving
Sorry to hear that. Other than the fan ours was faultless for 3 years. Might be worth considering swapping it sooner than you wanted if the maths add up? I can also vouch for the XC40 as a DS alternative, unless you need 7 seats. Keys now playing up too

Dear All,
I'm Philippe and I greet you all as a new membre to this forum.
The story with the blocked heater fan happened to me recently.
The car (Landrover Discovery Sport Diesel purchased new in 2016 now counting 65000 km) had been standing still during only 5 days.
After that the fan refused operation.
I was eager to resolve the problem by following your guide ( on a Evoque ) with the 60 cm stick.
Unfortunately I could not find the fan, not from above neither from below ( as I have a car post ).
In the mean time I contacted a local ( not official ) landrover mechanic to make an appointment.
Now 1 week later, all of the sudden it started to work again perfectly.
I will anyway check with the mechanic because I planned to make a trip to the French Alps in one month from now.
It better doesn't happen there as temperatures go easy below -15°C.
Any suggestions from an owner of the same car are most welcome
I wish you all a very happy new year.

In the mean time I got info from my mechanic:
To reach this fan ( for greasing etc. ) it is indeed necessary to drop the dashboard. But it will be a very tricky operation to put it back in place correctly. Chances are that noices ( from vibrations etc. ) will appear afterwards.
So no action has been undertaken.
I got the advice to regularly let the fan turn at full speed.
Wait and see.
Best regards to you all

Philippe,
That’s the normal response from LR to solve the problem which is why some people sell their car if the problem persists rather than fix it.
I’m unsure why you can’t see the fan to move it if stuck because it’s in the same place as everyone else who has found it? Perhaps ask your mechanic to show you where the fan is the next time you see them?

The solution above worked for me on my UK / RHD 2016 (66) SE Tech Diesel, so thanks to all for their posts.
Only things I'd add are that the fan blade assembly is fairly central to the vehicle (ie, more or less in front of the media screen, as opposed to being in front of the driver's position, as I'd originally assumed), and that it initially looked to me more like a fixed, slotted cover, than a rotating fan blade assembly. It also took more effort to move than I'd expected, adding to the feeling that what I was looking at was a fixed cover. However, it did free-up with a reasonable amount of effort, and all is now well (for the time being, at least).
The attached picture shows the fan, and was taken from the nearside of the car looking towards the windscreen, through the space revealed with the detachable (battery) cover removed. You can see the rear battery terminal in the foreground, and the fan blade is the white plastic object visible at the top left corner of the opening.
Hope this helps.

Phil, Many thanks for this useful solution it saved me an expensive and troublesome dealer visit. I would just add to help others identify the fan that the blades are not a propellor type but it is a centrifugal fan with closely spaced vanes and looks rather like the fins of a small air cooled engine. I couldn't get mine to spin but it moved off of its dead spot enough to get it to run when switched on.
For others in Australia unfortunate enough to have been conned into buying one of these unresolved prototype cans of worms, the standard tool of a 45cm long piece of fencing wire works just fine. Don't get it stuck in the fan vanes though.

Thank you so much for this thread @Phil!
It took me quite some time to find the fan, so here for all left-side steering vehicle owners:
You have to enter on the other side through the small service flap an look to the right. There is a small hole where you can see the fan and turn it. From the other side it is not possible:

I have just been out to the car to have another go at finding the fan through the small flap.
Sorry to say no success. I stuck my arm right inside the cavity to try to feel my way around but no success.
any chance of a photo of the "small hole" that you can see the fan through

Rather than trying to feel the fan have you used a torch to see the fan through the flap? From experience of RHD vehicles, the fan is 0.5-1m away from the flap. It’s unlikely your arm is long enough to reach it. You need something longer.
I have tried the torch but on a LHD vehicle there is the Brake Vacuum Booster and the Windscreen Wiper linkage that sits right across where the photos above show the fanGassing Station | Land Rover | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
