To be honest, your best bet will be to shop around.1. Try the comparison websites to get a gauge of price. Only takes 10 mins.
-- And yes, an Over Drive is likely to be seen as a modification, so again try it adding it on the comparison sites and see what difference it makes.
2. You'll have to have a phone round. The NFU used to be good, but I have a feeling they aren't so these days and may not even do young drivers anymore. Failing this, just grab a 4x4 mag, maybe total off road or some other car mag and simply flick through the ads phoning the specialist insurers and see what they can offer. Some might not consider the OD a mod, some might and some might not charge much for it.
Defenders are great, my first car at 17 was also a Defender, a 1993 300Tdi hard top. It was brilliant!
Try the classic insurers? My first one was a whisker over 20 years old when I bought it as my first car, one of the classic insurers came in at much less than friends we getting charged for Golfs/MKII Escorts and the such like. I accept that things might have changed a bit since then!
Back on track, I suspect the OP lost his intermediate shaft, not half shaft, as that would leave him stranded. My Puma did the same (with days left to run on the warranty!). Will fix it properly with the Ashcroft kit if (when?) it does it again. He's completely right though, objectively they are crap. Come to think of it, my first one was too. I guess I'll never learn...

Yes that would be classed as a modification. If its a Roamerdrive, they are worth quite a lot used. Try Adrian Flux. I have insured my Series with them for years. Heritage and NFU are are well known to be good. I don't any of those are on the comparison sites.
Exercise caution driving a defender. Yes they are strong, but roll over protection and side protection are pathetic next to modern cars. In some ways they are good to learn in as in every vehcile you drive after it will seem quite luxurious ;D

You may be better off on the TVR forum. Griffiths and Chimaeras used this ECU and there are lots of people who have upgraded to newer systems.
