New Defender in the Wild
Discussion
I think the new one is a jazzed up discovery/Kia Pajero or whatever.
I need a cross between a tractor and a truck (for work and for my land) and I bought an old defender yesterday. I'll gradually give it galvanised doors/chassis/bulkhead and look after the rest of it and maintain it. Looks like I will hopefully have it for the forseeable.
The ineos is a load of st as well. I want a manual box option. Without it, the thing is a fricking computer game. I am lugging trailers around and I don't want to hire a computer nerd when of of the brains isn't recognised by the software.

Huge ? I thought the opposite - found myself on the tail of one today, the first I've seen. Viewed from the rear, the cabin seemed far narrower than I'd expected (I thought initially from afar that it was a Suzuki). Front & side profile view was better, but it didn't seem huge at all, more compact than the D3 I was driving. The bumpers front & rear made the styling fussier than I'd expected. Like many posting, I see it more as a replacement for the D4.
Saw one in town last week.
Front looks ok but the back end? Did they have some holiday booked and just thought “fk it, that’ll do”?
Reminds me of a cheap and clumsy Eastern European or budget Far East attempt at “styling”.
Just seems to be a random collection of individual light units chucked at a panel they neither fit nor compliment.
Mind you, probably unimportant to the target buyers.....the neighbours can’t see who’s driving it if viewed from behind so who cares?

I don’t not enjoy it.You might actually enjoy it
I’m just saying I’ve seen a new one and to me, it looks st.
Is that allowed?
ok. I can see you're warming to it
I saw my first one on the road on Saturday in Cambridge. Crikey it looks cheap and plasticky - the guy driving it was a fool too and drove like an idiot.
I actually thought it looked like a modded Suzuki or Mitsubishi from the rear. Nothing like a real defender. Lost it’s class completely.

Do you remember the gnashing when the Disco3 came out? Most hated it
Don't recall this at all. The only thing I do recall was comparison to the Ford Transit Connect, as it had a similar squared off shape at the rear. I don't remember much "gnashing".Do you have any reference material?

I've started to see a few round my neck of the woods recently also. I think they're quite spec sensitive, by virtue of having so many possible combinations. Saw a few in blue and grey with black features that look great. The green with white features just isn't my thing.I actually thought it looked like a modded Suzuki or Mitsubishi from the rear. I had a look round one at an event and it didn't look particularly cheap to me. Everything fitted well, nothing moved when pushed, very sturdy by all accounts. Its definitely not an exercise in leather like some of its pricier siblings, but then I guess variety in the brand is the point.
I think i'll have to disagree about class with you on this one also. I live in a farming community, all the defenders are horrible nasty things that belch out smoke and rattle like nothing you've ever seen. They should all me crushed and replaced with machines that protect the environment they rely on for an income, IMO.

What a stupid comment to make on a motoring forum. Or anywhere really..... Shanksy87 said:

Yeah, because running a hybrid HiLux or whatever instead will completely offset the impact of shipping produce all over the world on a ship that does gallons to the mile, stripping back the countryside in to massive mega-fields growing tonnes and tonnes of crops on a scale that make industrialised harvesting the most cost effective way to get goods to market, and all the non-organic stuff thrown at the ground before a crop has even been planted.
As for livestock......they’re even worse.
