TFL in the US (on YouTube) aren’t having any luck with their Defender. Bought with their own money as a long termer, now awaiting car number 3.
Read the thread start to finish. And others vehicles can have their moments, my last Toyota Hilux was a bit crap, water in the headlights, and a misfire/flat spot in the rev range.

Major Ivan Hirst, lived much of his life in my home town, Huddersfield. Saw the potential in the factory and the people of VW. They were ready to lock it up but he saw something in that little car.
Slightly biased, wrote a thesis on this a number of years ago.

The VW beetle was designed by Josef Ganz. But as he was a jew, they kept that quiet.

There's that bit too. Him, and the work that was done along with Hans Ledwinka over at Tatra. The fact they paid Tatra (visited the town where they make them a few years ago) a "substantial" sum of money in the nineties, says it all. I don't think we will ever know the real story behind VW as Porsche liked things his own way, to suit him (Nazi party member when it suited him, not when it didn't), and that anyone who remembers it was either killed or id long dead. The 1933 Standard Superior.

. . . "These really do feel like Discoveries."
. . . "They're certainly not small and nimble like a Wrangler."
. . . "This one feels very premium, very upclass, very much like a Range Rover, a Mercedes, or a BMW."
The aforementioned father-and-son channel on YouTube has now received its third Defender, and things sound quite pleasant. What's more: JLR has given them the V6 (instead of their original I4). The interior has also been upgraded.

Their previous video (link provided many posts further above) explained the story of how the first two units had to be replaced by JLR. The first because of multiple internal failures; the second because of a damaged harness when attempting to fit a bumper-mounted winch.

One of my old girlfriends lived/grew up in Marsden. She really could drive too
Haven't been back to that part of the world in over a decade, but the last time I did I took the scenic route home from Atherton to Bramley in Leeds. Came up over the tops and down into Marsden in the freezing cold and ice. Called in to pay my respects, we scattered my Nan's ashes up there years back. Smashing place300bhp/ton said:

Some vehicles are just plain duds. Anything with a GM Northstar engine .
That's a bit of a sweeping statement and not an accurate representation. Some vehicles are just plain duds. Anything with a GM Northstar engine .
Some enterprising soul even patented a repair kit as the problem was so common
https://patents.google.com/patent/US8740532
But you have to remove the whole engine and transmission, from underneath the car, not through the bonnet opening, to do any major repairs.
And if you try and sell anything with a Northstar engine in it to a used car lot, they will simply turn you away.

They used head bolts instead of studs and the threads were too fine for the aluminum block. Bolts pulled out, head gaskets blew and the engine overheated causing more damage.

As latter examples didn't suffer this at all. And even those that could, don't always. It depends on use/location and other factors. GM sold vast numbers of these engines.

Watched that video. What a load of bks. The perfect owner of that car is someone unafraid of DIY. Clean, low mileage one-owner car, and look after it with preventative maintenance. Sorted. Some enterprising soul even patented a repair kit as the problem was so common

Before I go through the painful exercise of engaging with the dealer network, anyone know if they are deals on the new defender to be had?
I've heard rumours of discounts of over 10% (off list) if you can buy and register before the end fo the year.
Any of the many used ones selling ?
cheers
