Update - JLR have agreed to replace the engine and cover everything. There’s quite a back order so it might take a few months. In the meantime they’ve sorted out a hire car.

Considering this could have been disastrous, I think this is a fantastic result and JLR have been excellent in sorting this.
What a result. Well done and Thank God for that hehe

Thanks all, I’m very pleased at the outcome :-)

Do you think that's down to the dealer fighting your corner, or has it all been dealt with direct with JLR?
^^^ I initially called JLR who told me I had to get the car assessed by the dealer. They confirmed the crank was broken and a new engine was required and submitted the claim for me. They seemed optimistic and were very helpful throughout.

I get the impression that there are a lot of these claims happening and that JLR are doing the right thing and sorting it out - maybe they have set aside X amount to address this and also improve their reputation. . . . . When this happened there would have been zero chance of me purchasing another RR. Based on how I’ve been treated so far and assuming all goes well, I’m more inclined now to look at another RR in the future.

It's great that they covered it but why oh why are these cars built so badly in this day and age? It should do 150k before Even thinking about opening it up. I would really like a RR or defender but it just seems they are a total nightmare.

An amazing result all things considered. Well done. In this case I am happy to be proved wrong.

That is a superb result - lucky you!

My Disco 4 is currently having a donor engine put in it from a crashed RR Sport, after it spun a bearing. It had done 150k though so not too bad. My Disco 4 is from 2009, so economically not really viable to do much really, but the donor engine, fitted, serviced, new brake lines etc is about £5k which makes it just about worthwhile rolling the dice on it.

There is a company in Hinkley who do a rebuilt engine with upgraded shells for £6k all in (Prestige Autos). Could be worth a punt if your used engine deal falls through, but yes I agree some of them are just not worth spending £12k from QPOL for their fully upgraded engine.

I'm hoping the Independents start dealing with the 2.0 Ingenium as that is a very expensive lump from LR and I've heard its exactly the same design as the ones that fail!

I was warned off buying any rebuilt/reconditioned engines, by various people, hence going down the donor route, but not sure why that should be so really. That's a good price for a rebuilt engine (from Hinkley). Hopefully, I will get another few years out of the old bus with the donor engine........I've made sure it is fitted with the later oil pump and replaced the plastic manifolds. Fingers well and truly crossed!
