Great info so far. Want to add make sure you check the heating/air con. Look for a little book with an exclamation mark and check it can direct hot/cold to either side of the car. If not the blend motors have probably gone and i can tell you this is a VERY nasty/expensive job! Leaking coolant into footwell- heater core o-rings, again nasty job. Mid 99 on have the better bosch electricals

FSH/HPI essential.

they are very nice motors, choose a nice one and you'll never want to drive anything else again... good luck!

this site is excellent- www.rangerovers.net

Folks, cheers for all the info that keeps coming in ... i keep adding it to a "checklist" that i have made up to take with me.

Finding that the 2.5 diesels are like rocking hose poo, but i keep looking.

By return, once i have found my rangie (and assuming that i dont get it all wrong and buy a lemmon) i will put all the info together into a "buying a p38a" FAQ.

Hopefully will help others in teh same situation ....

Well ... bact to autotrader for me

The book and exclamation mark came up on mine when the air con needed regassing (faulty radiator- sorry can't remember of the correct A/C term).

when i used to use th 4.6 alot the air con was ok, showed no symbols on dash etc but could sometimes be a bit weak, i dont know if this is a common thing on them or wether ive just been used to german a/c?, while i was looking not so long ago there was a really nice 1998 DSE with 80k and full history on autotrader i think it was £7995 but it could well be sold by now, if its not, worth a look i would say.

Thats true theres quite a few reasons why they pop up but if it cant direct the air defo the blend motors. Mine were stuck hot on one side and cold on the other. Most inds quote £800+ to change them, its at least a 6 hour job and the motors themselves over £200. A biggy!

Follow the guide on Cunningham's site (above) for a shortcut way of doing them (including sourcing them). It took me about an hour and a half.

Just a quick note to say thanks to all for your assistance and advice in finding the right Rangie.

After rejecting some 15 odd cars for various reasons identified by you lot, i have just put my deposit down on a 2000 V 2.5DSE in oslo blue and all the usual toys. One owner and 61,000 miles.

I pick it up just after the bank holiday with a new MOT on it too.

Here's hoping its as good as it appears, but i am happy

Might even look for somewhere to learn some proper offroading skills too, something i have never tried before, and I should get some proper mud on it, before friends accuse me of getting a Chelsea Tractor.

So, once again, Thanks for your help everyone, definitely helped me weed out a lot of lemmons!!

Congratulations, hope you find it as useful as mine's been. It just gets better the more I drive it.

How many other cars can turn up at a business meeting, with nobody aware there is the best part of a ton payload on board and then take the scenic cross country camera free route away.

Cheers, no way have i got the patience to do attempt a job like that. i know an ex-lr mechanic who did my blends & o-rings for £350 all in so didnt end up that bad for me

Best of luck with the rangie!

Well, to bring this thread to its conclusion ... colected my new toy today and am thoroughly chuffed to bits!!

closest to offroad it has been in my 12 hours of ownership has been a few speed bumps and pot holes, but i am sure that i will have changed that by the end of the summer ....

so, here she is, a 2000 V 2.5 DHSE in Oslo Blue (never got that, used to live in Oslo, and this colour does not remind me of the place !!!)

Apparently the wheels are not standard, but they look OK, not too "bling"

so thats me a proud member of the 4x4 owners corner ... and putting Red Ken's nose out of joint too!!!

very nice , those wheels look like the V8 Vogue alloys from the latest shape model so aftermarket yes but not bling in my opinion they really sit the car.

ahh always good to know where they came from ... i figured they were not origional but they looked appropriate. I was happy with it because the lights on the dashboard lit up and went out as stated on this thread, that it had a shiney new exhaust and seemed very tight ...

now to learn how to get it muddy!!!

If you're competent to do the head gasket yourself then it is probably worth taking a punt on a silly offer.

However, twice that asking price would get you a better P38 that doesn't need all that work. Why bother with the project?

There are some very nice P38s to be had. Now into the third year with mine (2.5 DSE) and I am delighted with it.
