I 've just seen the press release pictures and I HATE IT WITH A PASSION well some of it they've dumped the defender badge! and the fresh air vents! and put a poxy (i've driven a new tranny and hate this engine)blue badge engine in it.
:sulkmode: why not fit the new TDV8? be same across all the fleet then.

Rant over with, the new rear seats in the 110 look good and I'll wait to see one in the flesh to see how much more they've shaved off the classic.

scratchchin Don't know too much about the interior, but the poxy blue badge engine was (as near as damn it) designed and developed by the same people who did the TDV8...

When you drove the Tranny was it the 85ps/250Nm 2.2 or the 140ps/375Nm 2.4 (or one the many variants in between)?

I'm not sure which engine it was scratchchin.

looks ok to me, the 90/110 ( i refuse to call them defenders ) has needed a new dash for years...

It just looks like a school run car/motorway rep mobile now.

I understand the new engine is more powerful and has more torque etc, which is good. Though, they've lowered the ratio of first gear...which was pretty much useless in a TD5 - I found myself pulling away in second all the time.

I said in another thread on here that they should fit the TDV8 to the Defender. Now that, I WOULD buy.

I see the point of the new rear seats (I'm referring to the 90 in particular) but they're still FAR too big and take up too much room.

Also, could you really bring yourself to throw a muddy toolbox/garden waste/filthy dogs in the back of that???

I hate it, it's not a 'Defender'.

Edited to add pics of rear seating in the 90...

blurrrgh at dash, thats nasty. the outside is fine though. i dont like those engines in transits either, all rev & no guts - just what you dont want in a 4x4.

I think the engine will be quite nice in this, actually. It's been tweaked for the Defender and peak power comes at 3500rpm with 90% of it from 2200rpm to over 4350rpm...so power wise, it seems okay.

Torque (265lb/ft) peaks at 2000rpm but "more than 232lb/ft is delivered from 1500rpm to 2700rpm." Those sound like good figures to me.

I can't wait to get my hands on one and see what it's like.

As far as i can see it's all an improvement (except one less 5 cyliner engine in production). Maybe it'll win back some ground from those godawful pickup things.

I don't think the new dash is as functional as the old Defender. To me, it looks too euroboxy.

Is this the same engine as in our 2004 LWB twin wheel Tranny? If so - oh dear.

The more I look at this the more I think Landrover have forgotten the roots of the classic.

The new engine will be lighter, more efficient, just as powerful, have 60Nm more torque, and (because of the common-rail injection allowing more range and accuracy of multistage injections and general engine construction) quieter too.

So what is the actual problem......

PS. If you want the TDV8 then you will have to put up with an auto. As the ZF 6HP26 autobox is the only transmission available to LR that won't be ripped apart by the engines torque. The TDV6 with the Disco manual transmission would be the best bet, if it would fit.

PPS. If you want the decent version of this engine in the tranny then you will have to pay extra for the more powerful versions.

I bought one of these new in 2002, because I've always loved them. Plan and hope for it to be the only car of mine I ever drive.

A slight shame that they dropped the Defender name - although purists do regard this as a bit of a late (& therefore inauthentic) appendage to the marque.

Although I understand why they've changed the dash - because a lot of people are buying these for social cachet and kudos - and such changes make them less likely to sell it on, because they are not 'cars' and are relatively difficult to live with, unless you actually love the 'Landrover thing'. However - I've noticed people often being intrigued with the vehicle (e.g. supermarket car park) & just peering in at the driver's door. This new dash does not fit the spirit of the vehicle!! It's positively silly!! It's like fitting pretty plastic bumpers to a farm tractor. Completely incongruous. The previous interior was fitting with the external image. This new one does not at all.

I'm really glad I bought mine when I did.

But, although they're ballsing it up somewhat - guess we should be grateful that they're still making it at all, at least. Will end in 2010, or something.

Oh - heh heh - I wonder how this lovely new dash will cope with the copious amounts of water that it will find itself fed from behind? The 110/90s are not known for keeping water out - and this is all part of the magic/teething. The foam 'seal' at the base of the front window actually draws water inside all along its length - enough to drip significantly. All part of the ownership experience!

It'll be interesting to see what the new engine is like as the td5 isnt exactly know for its low down torque ( well nothing below 2000rpm to be exact) and to get that to go you have to rev the nads of it, and thats with a je stage 2 conversion on mine ( admittedly in a disco van)

Bugger it! Can't blame me for trying as I am one of the design engineers for the TDV6 and TDV8 and work with those who designed/developed the Puma I4 engine for Mondeo/'X'type/Transit and now this.

I hope you will be pleasantly surprised by this engine.
