I actually prefer the styling of the D3, but still love the look of the RR. Each to their own though.
The interior of the RR is fantastic, more luxurious & better looking than the more utilitarian D3. This is actually what swayed it for me to buy a D3 though, as I wouldn't be happy using a RR as I do my D3. Most weekends the D3 gets loaded up with kids & dogs, whom are often covered in mud, plus all the gear that you need for the various country pursuits that we follow. The RR interior is just too plush to subject it to such regular abuse. The more utilitarian D3 interior offers the just the right amount of luxury, combined with a reasonably easy "wipe clean" factor, that perfectly suits my needs.
Another thing I've noticed with the D3, which is possibly due to having LAND ROVER lettering, the envy/jealously/anti-4x4 nonsense is far less than a RR (or other premium 4x4) attracts.
From a driving angle, I'd urge anyone to test a D3 before buying an older RR which doesn't have the TR system that the D3 has.

i can see your point, the Disco makes a great family car and in terms of off road ability i wouldnt think theres anything to split the RR and Disco, both have air suspension, low range gearbox,TR,HDC, thier similar in size etc, and as you say they make the better family car, it is entirely personal preference and if someone gave me a Disco 3 tomorrow i would be very happy but if i was spending my own money i would buy the RR just because i personally prefer the shape.

yes IMO the only area where the Disco actually betters the RR is off road, of course I think an 08 supercharged with the rear limited slip and Terrain Response fitted with smaller wheels would set a new benchmark. I can also agree with the utilitarian aspect, the Disco looks purpose made for muddy wellies. Lastly, because this is PH: speed matters and the Supercharged engine does a fantastic job launching the tank 4 seconds quicker to the 60 mark than the D3, 6 seconds if you let Overfinch have a tinker. On road there's really no comparison and thats speaking from experience, before anyone screams that performance is irrelevant, the OP is considering the SC for a reason.

the latest shape RR was developed a fair while before the Disco 3 though which could explain the Discos off road advantage, i wonder what the rumoured 2009/2010 new shape RR will be like though, thats a car that im looking forward to been released

Don't waste your money on a Rangie, but a Discovery 3 HSE, 7 seats and very sexy in black! If the Rangies seem cheap now, they are going to be even cheaper next year after you've spent the money.

to tell the truth i think the Discos a great car dont get me wrong but if it came down to the choice between one and a Rangie i would pick the Rangie every time personally i think it looks nicer and prefer the interior but really it comes down to personal preference at the end of the day.

Its only cause I have already owned one and ticked that box. Truth is mine took an age to sell, even though it had all the kit in a good colour combo. I therefore believe if you spend £50k on a newer RR now you'll lose the money very quickly. For a family vehicle the D3 is the one to have. I took out a TDV8 RRS the other day and thought it fabulous, but to impractical for a family (boot tiny), but as a 'ride' was awesome with the TDV8.

As for the new Rangie in post-2010 it will be lower and wider I hear.

i can see the appeal of the Disco as a family car, the 7 seats must be a plus on thier own, i wonder if the next shape Rangie will keep a similar shape to the current one or look completly different, the current one looks nothing like the P38 and in turn the P38 didnt look anything like the classic(it looks like a plush metrocab )

The boxy shape with the floating roofline seems to be the thing that makes a RR a RR, so prob not too muich change there for the new one?

afraid i dissagree with the D3 vs RR comparison. i have had both and looking to get a new Vogue TDV8. The D3 is way off the RR in terms of on road dynamics and ride quality - the steering is well over servoed and there isnt a lot in the wieght difference. The TDV6 (even chipped) is slow - the interior is ok but light years behind the RR. The full fat RR is a classic shape - when i had mine other SUV drivers would always look away when you drove past - its the daddy of 4x4's...period. THe interior is massively practical, even the Ivory leather is happy to be abused by dogs and kids - mine always had dogs, guns, oily stuff in it and after a valet looked brand new. THe new TDV8 Vogue is an excellent combination of luxury, practicality and relatively sensible in running costs......just my 2 cents worth but having owned both the driving experience and owning proposition of the RR is up there for me, its a special car. The D3 is a good practical family car - it just needs the TDV8 engine.....which i assume it will get at some point.

But is the RR worth almost 35% more than the D3, for that little extra bit of comfort, I think not. The D3 is a compromise otherwise no one would buy the RRS or RR. I think it represents the best all around package.
