Looking at buying a 90, witha budget of between 5,000 and 10,000 Pounds.

This is going to be a fun vehicle, not a daily driver at all.

I find the Ex Military 90s attractive and possibly with more character than stabdard ones, however I am not very knowledgeable on the subject.

What are the differences between the MOD vehicles and the standard versions ?

I assume that a MOD car would have been driven a fair bit, but would have been properly serviced during its lifetime compared to a high mileage one bought privately with little visibility on how hard its previous life has been.

Any pointers for me ?

All military 90,s and 110,s came with the naturally aspirated 2.5ltr diesel,as opposed to the 2.5TD and 300 T.d.i in there civvy counterparts. All will have been well maintained by the Army mechanically.Body wise expect the usual dents and layers of paint. Some are 24 volt others are 12.24,s will have a massive alternator under the bonnet.Inside is very spartan with a central light switch in the middle of the dash. This control the lights 6 ways, meaning you can have fronts on backs off.Brake lights on/off and vice versa. The chassis are strenthend more than the civvy ones. And all will be under sealed from new.For the Budget you have you will get an absolute minter. And would personally try P.A Blanchard,as they have the very best examples. www.pablanchard.co.uk

Unless you REALLY want one, don't.
1. They are a real mixed bag, some very good and some bitzas (and trouble).
2. MOD maintenance is not everything it is cracked up to be and in some cases they may have been standing idle for years.
3. The 2.5D is a dinosaur, gutless to the extreme.
4. It is much easier to identify a well looked after "Civvy" than a military, meet the owner.
5. With a Civvy you get a lot more for your money, a nice 300tdi engine, a stronger R380 gearbox and an interior.

Thats just my opion, but I sell hydraulic winches and have seen hundreds.

Thanks for your advise, definitely don't want a TD engine.

Also would teh ex MOD interior be even more basic than the civy ones ?

TD engines were deleted from military defenders after 6 months. Its a long story, but the short of it is they werent reliable enough.300T.d.i were introduced on the latest generation (wolf)Defenders from 97 on.And yes the interiors are completely basic.

You might want to have a look at www.witham-sv.com/ ex mod sales. Not all MOD landies are basic, alot of 300tdi "emmerdales" 90/110's where brought as a stop cap while waiting for the Wolf and to fulfil certain duties ie EOD, airfield duties etc where a MOD spec vehicle just wasn't needed.
