Hi guys, new to this forum, so apologies if this has all been asked before - had a quick shufty, but no answers all in once place.

I've had a classic and a 4.6 P38 over a few years and am considering an early (£20k) 4.4 I do very few miles a year (6-8000 between two cars) so fuel costs are not an issue, BUT I'm wondering what the usual bug bears are and if they are easy to fix. The suspension failed on my 4.6 but I repaired the pump and the aircon failed but I sold it before repalcing the condenser. Biggest pain was a flat battery if I did not drive it every week. But all in all not too bad.

Apart from that they were both great cars.

What issues am I possibly looking at with a 4.4 and are they mainly home fixable??

Cheers,

Virgil.

Cheers mate.

Does the rest of the car seem relatively well screwed together?

When I was shoping for my old P38 I noticed the majority (regardless of age/mileage) had jerky boxes, rough engines, dodgy heater panels/controls....

Should a 2002/2003 new shape still feel new at 60k 4/5 years old, or are bits starting to fall off?

well i dont own one at the moment(im hoping to by the end of the year), but my brother had a 52 reg TD6 up unitil a year ago, with 50k on the clock and it seemed very well built to me-certainly a lot more so than his previous P38, the only things i found fault with was the steering wheel been slightly squeaky when the ignition was turned off and the wheel retracts and the side indicators got water in them, other than that it was a great car, i will not make the mistake of buying a TD6 when i come to get mine though wink

Hi Guys,

We see these cars quite regularly in our workshops and on the whole are pretty good, (better than the previous model).

We do see some regular faults like, noisy pas pumps, rear susp noises, and there is an issue with rear tyre wear.

Other than that they are pretty good.

Cheers

My diff went last week, all sorted now but the car is going up for sale in the next couple of weeks as I'm having to do more miles and need a dieselfrown

Thanks guys.

I know it's impossible to predict what one particular car will do, but it's nice to get a general feeling for a Marque as a whole.

Thanks,

Neil.

There are some common faults that affect both diesel and petrol versions such as steering column adjustment motors and suspension faults. Diffs can also fail on both but tends to be Td6 due to torque delivery, also Td6 blows engines from time to time so 4.4 is a more reliable engine. The trim surrounding the window swtiches also "flakes" which looks unsightly as do the exterior door mirror housings, and the door arm rests on light coloured trim models can look shabby with use. If you buy one without the satnav/tv then the pixels on the stero display also fail. Check EVERYTHING works as it should. Specific to the 4.4 though is the failure of the alternator which is very expensive. Generally though they are much much better than P38, and hopefully most of the above will have been fixed under warranty so is worth checking the vehicle with Land Rover before buying it.

Eh, good news then...a few faults, but nothing that can't be easily fixed...

The LR322 is a modern car by all accounts compared to the P38. All the above points can be issues, but owning mine never had a problem. I would however recommend having a LR warranty, because it can be an expensive beast to own. Trouble is LR will only give a full warranty on RR's with 60,000 miles or less (thats confidence for you!)

Enjoy they are fabulous.

I'll Swap!

One thing i reccomend is Range Rover Assist. It's their breakdown cover. £176 pa, and the best service imaginable. (mine failed the MOT with a work balljoint, there is a new Freelander on my drive while the garage get the part in). Other than that running the RR is a pure joy. TD6 returns 25.9MPG with the 210bhp chip that cost £180 (22.9 without)

Unfortunately I'm having to get a pickup, going to be a bit of a difference to the RR.
