Having looked at a Freelander for my wife she is still adamant that she wants a Defender, 90 or 110 does not really matter but must have the seats in the back (sorry do not know what that is called I am new to the Defender scene), can we get a decent and reliable one for £3-5K?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Before committing make her drive one first. Some people love most hate them. My ex loved driving mine, the new lady would rather give it a miss. Does she realise they're bloody hot in the summer and freezing in the winter and no matter what type of weather is outside at some point it'll leak water on to you!!

We both love driving ours, but this is now our 4th, so we are somewhat accustomed to the idiosyncracies of Land Rovering.

Defenders are a special case, and I suspect very much a marmite car....

Def try before you buy, and at that budget be VERY wary of what you are buying, could end up being a money pit.

If you were a bit closer to me, welcome to try mine.

How big are you Chippy 17? My Dad and I are big guys, broad shoulders, farming/rugby types, you know, we have terrible problems with Defenders because there is no shoulder room on the right side and it hurts after about an hour or so. We were going round the local 4x4 garage, my Dad said I do love Defenders, he got in one and it all came flooding back why he got rid of the last one! He bought an Izuzu instead!banghead

6'2" 20 stone fat bastard here and I've never had a problem with Defenders - most comfy vehicles I've owned. Drove to Italy and back in my modded 90 V8 CSW several times leaving at home various including Honda Accord Type-R, Merc E500 and Jag S-Type!

If you don't like Defenders it's coz you're a wimp - plain and simple. Buy your missus one, it will make a man of her in no time! yes

Perhaps she is unaware of quite how 'rugged' they are but she is a fairly tough chick!

many thanks for the offer, as you have said my main concern is that my budget is not enough to get me a decent one, I have a LR specialist near to me so I intend to go and see what he has.

an average six footer, tough and sinewy! No sorry that was when I was 20, the sinewy bit has given way to flab! I do not think I would have a problem in this area

part of what I love about my wife is she has no interest in 'mod cons' and never uses or has any interest in them in her current car, she prefers no nonsense.

If your too tall you need to get a bulkhead removal bar and some new extended seat runner rails, then you can move the seat back, I am 5'10" and 96kilo's and the defender fits me perfectly so I don't need to bother.
