Trying to get some quotes for fitting a roll cage and diff locks to my new toy.So far have only had time to email all the major players in this field.

Now we are talking in the region of £3k worth of business here, and to date I have not managed to get a firm quote from anybody.

Scorp and Frogs have mailed, but both priced the wrong cage, I then supplied the correct part number from safety devices, but havnt yet had an answer back.

How hard is it to spend money in this country these days ?

Anyone any suggestions as to who to use ?

Those are two companies I wouldn't use for various reasons. Most of these companies are old school garages. You'll need to pick up the phone and speak to someone. They are normally a lot more helpful and the reason they are not using the computer is because they are talking to people about Landrovers.

I agree with the sentiment, but those sort of calls are difficult to make from work.

Agreed, the names mentioned have a "reputation", but I dont know anyone locally or even further afeild that would be interested in the work.

My last cage was fitted by Rogers of Bedford, not had chance to speak to them yet.

Any recommendations ? I did ask on a couple of the landy forums but didnt get any response.

Very frustrating. And to make matters worse, safety devices wont even sell me a cage direct, I have to go through a dealer.

I've done loads of business with them over the years and although they're hard to get to talk to on the 'phone, I'm very happy with the standard of service.

Dropped a mail to Devon on Tuesday, still waiting for a reply.

Im off tomorrow so will spend some time on the phone and see what happens.

I just would have thought in the current climate firms may have been a bit keener for the business. If you have a website with email, surely you check it on daily basis, regardless of how busy you are ?

Whats actually folks beef with Scorp ? Bear with me here as Im returning to the fold after about 4 years.

I know there ad covers about 10 pages and is full of everyone elses product with no prices, but I used them in the past and had nothing but help.Has Colin Aldred who used to own it moved on or what ?

It used to be the thing to knock Frogs, but now it appears to be Scorps turn.

All well and good, but I need a good 4x4 specialist supplier.......

I don't mind people selling other peoples products but scorp really take the piss IMO all of the supposed engineers I've had the displeasure of speaking to at their place couldn't tell one end of a hammer to their cock! Sorry I've never had to deal with such morons in my life. Shop around and find someone interested in their product and not making money out of other peoples hard work.

Thats what Im trying to do, but it does seem very hard to part with my money.

Spoke to Devon today, but didnt really come away feeling Id made any progress.

Very tempted to take a week off and do it myself.

Have you tried speaking to some members of your local land rover club, you may find there is a local blacksmith or engineer who has made a cage.

Or you could try Tomcat, Whitbread Offroad, 3M, QT or Chris Perfect for a motorsport quality cage.

Hope this helps.

Its not super easy. I am currently fitting a full cage in my 90 and it is a lot of work. The one I am fitting is a Protection and Performance external internal on a 90 HT and I have spent hours on it so far!

Mine is slightly more tricky as I am modifying it a bit to suit what I need a bit more. (2nd diagnol) (2 extra roof bars) (horizontal harness mounts) and so on.

I have also had to make a whole load of new bolt on mounts as my chassis is galvanised and I cant weld on to it.

Also notice on the pictured cage that the rear stays only go down onto the sides of the rear tub, not the chassis rails.

Is it a td5? If so you may get issues where the fuel lines go past the main hoop mounts to.

If you have patience, and a reasonable amount of tools you should be alright.

If you are still thinking about diff locks they are ok to fit also, but you will need a special tap for threading the diff casings (cant remember what it is off the top of my head) (NPT maybe). Also setting up the diff centre takes a fair amount of work.

Rgds
Peter.

Hi guys,

Interesting to hear your comments about some of the aftermarket suppliers in the trade! But notice I say suppliers not installers.

Its not good when you email, phone and fax, then get no response.

To me that means either they do not want your business or just could not be bothered as they are busy with other things.

I used to fit cages and aftermarket diff locks years ago and the only reason I stopped was the customer always thought the job took five minutes when it probably took 5 days, this nearly always meant they wanted to pay for 5 minutes work and no more!

I would try Mantec in Nuneaton, as I know they have fitted Safety Devices stuff in the past but be prepared to pay the going price!
Remember, the satisfaction of good quality last far longer the euphoria of low price!

Good Luck

Cheers Roy

Cheers Roy, will ring them tomorrow.
Have also emailed Foleys, who I would have said ought to be one of the most pro firms around.

I really cant believe how hard it is to spend money in this county.

Also spoke to Rogers today......"Ah yes, safety devicews, no we dont really deal with them anymore, tend to deal with p&p"...Me..."well. ok, can you quote me ? "

Them...." We'll call you......"

FFS.

No wonder this country is going down the toilet.
