Oh dear my LR dilema

I had one of these for a little while and absolutely loved it, but would I have it as my only car.......probably not unless I was only doing low mileage and didn't need to carry passengers on a regular basis. I've driven 07 Defender and still have yet to find anything better than the 50th, the V8/auto combination is superb.

Well im going to have a look at one during the week.I will have to take the wife with me,as although she likes them a lot,she doesnt think it will be suitable as a family car.She said the RR will fit the bill.Whats pushing the 90 for me most is the saving in repair bills compared to a RR,also the rarity of it.
I agree with Greelandy I've never had any luck with LPG systems on anything I've owned. As I said you cannot fail to love the 50th, it drives well in terms of its got enough power and the gearbox is smooth, its strangely quiet inside for a Defender and ride quality also seems better than diesel versions but might be my imagination! So to drive every day all those factors are in its favour. The down side is your still going to suffer with Land Rover elbow, although as there is no central bulkhead leg room is fine (I'm 6"3), and those seats in the back are no good except for very small people or short trips. MPG was low teens, around 12-15 but could do single figures if you cane it or drive flat out on motorway. Reliability/running costs are a mixture between standard Defender and RR Classic. The 4.0 engine can suffer with typical V8 problems with head gaskets and obviously the electronics controlling it can go wrong. The rest of the drive train should be very reliable if its been serviced. Compared to the L322 your looking at it'll be peanuts to run in servicing/repairs. L322 eats diffs at over £1000 a pop every 30/40k, not to mention all the other items that can go bang! HTH.
Regarding the transmission, how smooth is it between changes? It just seems that every Defender i have driven seem a bit clunky on the gear changes.Im expecting this to be a bit different on the Auto? And would you be able to get a baby seat on those rear seats?.One last question. You say its quiet inside, but how quiet, compared to a normal Defender? Thanks once again.

New laws make it illegal to attach a child seat to a side facing rear seat hence the new defender having all forward facing seats.BLUETHUNDER said:
Oh s**t.Is there no way around this?
Exmoor Trim offer forward facing rear seats which are legal for child seats:http://www.exmoortrim.co.uk/erol.html
You could store the original seats for when they're older, but you'll only have a 4 seater.
I haven't tried them, but am looking for a LR and have the same problem
Cheers,
Al
Gearbox is a ZF unit so changes as smoothly as your old P38, again this is as long as its been well maintained and doesn't have knackered U/J's, diffs etc. Noise levels are certainly acceptable and you can hold a conversation easily! I found it overall to be comparable to a Range Rover classic in terms of noise, performance and ride. Oh dear all this talk about the 50th has made me now think about getting another one

Havnt you bought it yet ?
No going to have a look at one this week. Its what the wife thinks that will tip the balance.Im stuck because i really want a new RR,but love the look and rarity of the 50th.I could also do without the maintainance costs of the L322.CHURCH has been very helpful in his knowledge. He,s given me some idea of what to expect.Well they wanted £1200 to put front facing seats in so im just going to mount a three point harness on to one of the existing seats and take a chance. The windows will have a tint to them anyway.I will probably have a RR in November as well, but seeing this today, then taking it for a drive won me over. The auto box was so smooth, and there is aircon as well. That actually works really well.

yes at www.defender50th.co.uk.I have a 50th it is brilliant but the fuel consumption v bad.I recenttly purchased a morgan and can go for a spin of say 125 miles for 10 quid;if I did that in the 90 it would be nearer £50.The engine sound of the 90 with windows and flaps open makes it worth it --well just.

I already checked your profile yesterday, and noticed you had a 50.What sort of MPG can i expect?Cant be as bad as my last 4.6?.I was in the market for a new RR,and still am.But i was really bowled over by this yesterday. And its different to what you see mostly on the roads.Gassing Station | Land Rover | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
