Have been looking for a 4x4 for a while and have now reduced the choice to a (second hand, 2005/6) RR Vogue or an X5?

I've driven both and prefer the RR for just blatent owner appeal, you just can't beat it for road presence and sense of occasion! However the fairer half prefers the X5!

In terms of actual ownership ie running costs, reliabilty, i am right in thinking that the RR, despite improving from previous reputation, is now better, but no-where on par with the X5?

One could argue that if you have to ask, you can't afford, but just wanted a second opinion from PH! Having a thing for Italian cars, I am kind of used to "character" but as the Missus would be the predominant driver, I don't she would be!

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Cheers!

In terms of reliability, then the X5 will just nudge in front.RR are still having an issue with front diff and drive shaft failure. But this is not common to all.It should'nt be enough to discourage you from the mark.I have driven both extensively, and i can honestly say that all though the X5 was well built,i found the ride appalling. It was just too hard.It was'nt a vehicle i could have lived with every day.You should be able to get a good deal on a RR,as prices continue to spiral down wards.

Just seen this thread - I've been running a RR v8 Vogue for last 3 yrs (mine is an early 03 model). I've covered about 20k miles in that time, including 2 return trips to Switzerland in snow etc.. I had a few niggly bits early on in ownership, but they were all made much worse by the dealer (although all sorted in the end). Had a steering column that sounded 'dry' when turning - apparently this is a known fault (not affecting all cars, but some) and it was fixed under warranty. And, er, that's it.

On trips abroad it has sat all day long at 80mph+ with a family of four, and I doubt I would take on such a trip in any other car. Kids in back watching DVDs, wife and I up front in total comfort. It's an absolute dream for that driving. Mine gets used most days and at the end of a day in the office it really is great to get in to and relax for the drive home. I love it!

I think if you buy an X5 you'll look at Range Rovers and wonder what could have been. You would never look enviously at an X5 from a Range Rover... wink

I get about 16mpg: mostly around town/ school run and occasional motorway driving. On motorways you'll see 24mpg if you stick to speed limits, but go over that and you'll see about 18/ 19 mpg.

Servicing not too bad - about £800 for a big one every other year. My business partner has one as well and his has also been spot-on.

I'll be part-ex'ing mine soon for a new 110 Defender, but will come back to RR in about a years time when I can hopefully get in to a TDV8.

HTH.

I can only speak for the X5.

We are on our second X5 (2004 3.0d Sport auto) in which we have done nearly 50k miles. And, it has been brilliant:
- Totally reliable (two bulbs and one recall for an upgrade)
- Economical - Average of 28 mpg from new (even better on long runs)
- First set of tyres lasted nearly 40k miles
- Front pads replaced at 44k miles
- Service every 20k miles @ c.£300
- Great to drive (for a big SUV)
- Comfortable and practical
- Tough (nothing has broken and there isn't a single rattle in 50k miles)
- Give it a clean and it still looks like new

For the last week I've had a new Porsche Cayenne on loan. The Cayenne has some superb qualities, but it too heavy, too thirsty and so ugly. Much prefer the X5.

I also run a Defender, but the only other LR product that might tempt me is the RR Sport - if I could rely on it matching the X5's quality, dynamics, economy and reliability.

rofl That is superb!!! Says it all as well...!

There is something about driving a Range Rover that is just, well, better! The X5 is a great car, and I'm not knocking it (and not just because it would fall over!), and the 3.0TD is certainly a lot more efficient than a RR.

But driving mine through snow in Switzerland, when everyone else was staying in, or stuck at the side of the road - well, it was great!

Like I said above, from the seat of a RR there are very few cars you would look at and rather be in.

Had a few RR along with a lot of other stuff you may think quite nice.

The RR is by far the best car I have owned from a list of things like Aston Martin DB9's, Audi S8's, Bentley Continental GT, Lambo's, X5 etc etc.

The drive, ride, interior quality and general comfort cannot be matched even by the likes of Bentley. My new RR Supercharged is absolutely superb and provides me with completely trouble free motoring, very reasonable servicing, excellent reliability (and this is my second one) and as others have said, you won't look at any other car wishing you were in it. The Range Rover is far superior to almost all other cars in my opinion.

The Queen has a few too, which says something! (apart from them being free)
