what do you make of the idea that putting a meter on the sensor can toast it?
Not a lot. Perhaps that comment was in relation to measuring the resistance, which would be a censored stupid thing to do and very likely to b*ggar it.

I wonder if this is the same issue that I have.

I'm on my 3rd MAF now, with no difference.
Whilst the car runs fine 90% of the time, occasionally it will refuse to idle at junctions and generally run a bit rough.

My MPG also never exceeds 13.4 average over a tank.

The killer though is that I hooked it up to a friend's EGA yesterday and the CO reading was all over the shop - at idle it was about 0.01 but as soon as some revs are applied, 2.6 is seen.

Would a faulty lamda cause this?

not sure if the lambda would fix the problem but I had both of them replaced a couple of weeks ago, cost 80 quid.

so less than a tank of petrol.
