ebay defender questions..
Discussion
hi guys,
finally got the cash together to purchase a defender. ideally an ex-mod one. from there i would like to do various mods to make it more off road capable but still be friendly on the road.
However i'm totally worried about buying a wrong'en and have to spend loads just keeping her running.
so i've been looking at two defenders on ebay which on the face of it match my ideal budget but not one bid on either. is there something that i've missed on these? any advice would be great.

her in doors thinks i'm mad so ideally i dont want to prove her right by me buying a real money pit.
thanks guys.

They both look pretty good to me, although I am far from an expert on such matters. Chassis/bulkhead condition is the real concern with any landy, but both are mentioned as being "treated" in the ads which should mean neither will have gaping great holes anywhere. 2.5 n/a diesel is supposed to be strong if a little lethargic, the next step up is the 2.5td which I was advised to avoid as they tend to go pop - if you want more power but still a diesel then best to try to find a Tdi (I am speaking generically here, not specifically MoD as think they favoured the simplicity of the n/a 2.5).
Blatant plug time - if you are not dead set on ex-Mod and not dead set on a 90, then I will probably have my 110 up for sale soon; galv chassis for peace of mind and V8 with LPG conversion. Just sorting a couple of things for the MOT and then will go through next week so will have 12 month full tckt. Will be up somewhere between £2500-3000.
Sorry for blatant plug, couldn't help myself lol

I can't anything obviously wrong but it would be better to look first, or buy cheap.
Of the two I would prefer the first one, six years of ownership and regular rust control implies knowledgeable ownership, which to my mind having a 'before & after' treatment does not.
Alternatively, as has been sugested, you are well into TDI country, you can always buy some olive paint and a big brush. I do prefer the older doors though.
Good luck!

Not sure yet Mark, I love it and don't want to sell but wife drives our Alfa to work everyday and she wants something smaller and more economic (thinking something like a Smart Roadster at the mo for her). The Alfa also acts as family car however so either it or the Landy needs to go (not allowed 4 cars seemingly). The Landy much as I love it, can't really do the long haul trips to see family in Scotland or holidays in France etc I will see how much I miss it and if it's loads, then I will swap the Alfa and get a much newer 110 TD5 in XS trim or something.
