We have a TD5 90 Silver Edition '06 - coming up to its 2nd annual service (SERVICE B) - 'phone up local LR dealer for approximate price. "That will be £615 Sir" - long pause - and hasty retreat.

Phone Keith Gott in Hampshire (http://www.keithgott.co.uk/ about 10 miles from where I work)- that will be "That will be £299 + VAT Sir" Booked in courtesy car provided - no problems- good service - thoroughly recommended.

I know LR dealers have flash sites and overheads but surely that is taking the proverbial.

£380 for a Freelander TD4 oil change.

Well, its a little more than an oil change but not much, if the entire thing took an hour I would be amazed.

[thread hijack]

I'm looking at an LPG conversion for my 4.6 Rangie.... and one of the potential LPG installers wanted to know the engine code for my car, so he knew which model of engine he would potentially be converting (intake manifold and EFI systems were changed during production in 1999-2000)

I was 99% certain that I had the newer engine, but called an LR dealer with registration number to check.

Spoke to the service department who told me that the 4.6 engine in Range Rovers ran from 1994-2003. When I commented on the upgrades in 1999-2000, all I got was "Really?" and "Oh, right." followed by recieving the engine number for my car.

If main dealers aren't even knowledgeable about stuff like that, then I'm hardlt going to trust them to service my car!!!

Fortunately, I've got a good indy on my doorstep... not the cheapest, but certainly cheaper than a main stealer, and he knows LR's inside out apparantly!

Dear all,

Just read this thread and thought I'd introduce myself.

I am on here, although just beginning to use this forum, usually over with the supercars, but I am the Service Manager at the above mentioned dealer, and I am happy to help any PHer out with whatever Land Rover or 4X4 service or problem.

Not poaching for business, just an informed petrolhead who likes to help.

Cheers,

Alan.

Hi Alan - thanks for the offer!! as a fellow PH'er and customer I was wondering if you could answer a question. A few weeks ago my RR was in for a 'Land Rover - recall'. something to do with the diff I think. what was it exactly and would it have any coincidence with a problem I've had a couple of times since. Whilst driving along at slow speed the message centres asks me to select neutral and the light on the dashboard (the same icon thats below the high / low gear selector) flashes. I hadn't pressed any buttons but lost power.... any ideas.

Nice new service centre by the way - I've bought my last two 4x4's from you guys so its good to see you expanding!

I've only heard bad things about main dealers. A friend has a Discovery, which turned 3 years old recently so went in for service and MOT.

It needed some warranty/recall work doing a few months later (a common theme with the car), and the garage asked for a copy of the MOT cert as they "couldn't find theirs" - it later came out that they hadn't actually done the MOT. I know, my friend should have checked for the cert on collection - but still!

Gareth,

The enhancement programme for your diff was to replace the splines in the front differential assembly for ones that will pro-long the life of the unit, and will prevent any excessive wear for years to come.

IT IS NOT A RECALL! There is no safety issue or need for alarm for customers with RR products.
Whilst I was at Lamborghini, and Bentley to be fair, there were many updates that were carried out during the course of routine maintenance that most of the time, the customer was unaware of the updates that had occured during their vehicles stay.

I think it is an excellent sign of the times that the modern motor manufacturer actually cares about how their product is once it goes out of the factory gates, and you can be cynical and say it is down to litigation, but I like to think that it is actually a very good demonstration as to why you buy a certain brand, which stands for durability and luxury in the first place.

Gareth, any time yu want to pop in for a coffee and a chat, you are most welcome.

Cheers,

Alan.

Hi Alan

I might just take you up on that offer - I'm still getting the ocassional 'select neutral' message and the high/low warning flashing on my dashboard confused
