Suppliers with OTT carriage charges
Discussion
Have a grump on this morning with one of my suppliers... I used them last week for a small 'emergency' order as our main supplier was out of stock on an item.
Their charge to deliver one five kilo box containing six ball valves on a TNT next day service... £27.50 + VAT.
When the value of the goods is <£100, it just adds too much cost on to each product

As wholesalers we want to supply in bulk - not orders under £100.
So we charge a lot for postage and packaging to make it worth our while.
Our industry is extremely seasonal, so the carriage is never a problem during the summer when we're spending £7-10k a month with them, but this time of year that level of spend just isn't going to happen. So we charge a lot for postage and packaging to make it worth our while.

If you spend £7k PER MONTH with someone for most of the year I would have thought that a quick call to a manager and you would be able to get free delivery on all orders regardless of size. That is what I would expect.
Give it a try!
I would have thought so too... but no.Give it a try!
God help us if we need to order anything with any weight to it - £65.00 for a box if it goes over 10kg.

£5.95 up to 100KG with TNT. Not sure where they get that price from.Their charge to deliver one five kilo box containing six ball valves on a TNT next day service... £27.50 + VAT.

Our main distributor charges £30 plus VAT to deliver a laptop, which is why we have about ten main suppliers. Obviously some are more expensive but will ship one item at £5 which makes them cheaper. The advice therefore is get on the hunt for another distributor!
They're not our main supplier... but in our industry there are only so many (3-4 worth using). Our spend with our main distributor approaches £200k per annum, so we get well looked after there. There's just an overlap on some products, some things we can't buy from them.

We pay £9.35 up to 20kg without insurance, than charged per kg after.

How many do you send a day?
Anywhere from 1 to 20 - as said above, our work is very seasonal. 20 a day in the summer is the norm, 1-5 a day this time of year.Anyone can get a rate of £5whatever from TNT but not if you're only sending 10 a week.
Delivery charges also depend on type industry and goods being sent restless of actual cost.

My point being it depends on the qty you send and it's not correct to quote a cost without knowing how many deliveries you're sending out.

My point was you need to look at your carriage costs. You pay £9.35 for up to 20kgs.Anyone can get a rate of £5whatever from TNT but not if you're only sending 10 a week.

You can get it for less through online parcel booking sites without an account.

The main advantage is they aren't a franchise and I'm comfortable with them. Also for the little difference we have a good relationship with the local depot and the lengths they go to to help when we call them at say 4:30pm with an urgent collection is worth the difference in itself.
