Seem to me the taxation of BTL investments is a complete shambles.

It's neither completely investment or completely business but a mixture of the two.

why does that make it a 'complete shambles'?

The Government influences our behaviour by adjusting the tax regime. Seems very sensible (and speaking as one affected by this change)

It's always been a rather messy area - especially when you also include income from holiday lettings, agricultural lettings, commercial lettings etc - which are all treated differently in even more different ways.
