- OK, so a degree that provided you with an opening into the industry, following which you gained some fairly basic design and site experience - but not yet Chartered (i.e. professionally qualified), which is your 'glass ceiling'. All the Civils graduates that I mentor usually achieve Chartership in 4-5 years on a graduate training scheme which includes rotation between design, site, commercial, etc., so I suggest that Chartership needs to be your next realistic goal.
FWIW, I joined the industry at 16 and achieved Chartership and latterly Fellowship, demonstrating that hard work does pay. However, £5k per week is and will remain a pipe dream!
Little in the way of financial incentives to become 'chartered'. In fact after paying the ICE their yearly chartership fee I would likely be worse off. rofl

Unusual?
I work with quite a few guys in O&G (I'm in consultancy too), but I think the opportunities for such sums have dwindled. Happy to be proven wrong though!
Meanwhile, back in the sub-£5k/week world...... idea
Sorry, I meant: it's not that unusual, even at this low oil price. Rates are usually a tad lower for subsea/well engineering but easily made up by working a few extra hrs / on call working (supporting operations)

+1 for the above.

In which case you need to move within the industry. Any 'reasonable' company will encourage and support its staff to become Chartered (where appropriate) and also pay for your professional fees.
It's not all about financial incentive at Day 1 either - put in the effort yourself and you will reap the rewards later on (and I'm speaking from personal experience) - however, your £5k/week dream is likely to remain just that!
Good luck smile

Great thread this one!
Every week at that level is not possible! To average that amount you need to be working towards deals all year (or for years).
Intrested to know what the limit someone can be paid. As in not actually being the owner of the company??

OP please clarify the 'qualified' part of your Civil Engineering status
What do you want to know?

I obtained A - levels, obtained civ eng degree with first class honors. Worked in industry for a number of years designing temporary/permanent works and set out permanent works in the field when required.
Thanks for confirming.
You already know how to get £5000 a week (not cash but as good as):
Get qualified as MICE - covered above but repeated as its vital
Start a Practice
Work it up for 2-3 years and you're there - up to you how long you keep going for.

You'll need to work hard

Judging by the posts a slight change in approach may be needed too!

OP 1k a day is not unobtainable.

You could run your own company if you have an idea/product/whatever.

You could become a contractor in some business or other. This will however require a few years at the bottom of the ladder to gain the experience etc..

Why do you feel the need to make 5k per week though? 5k a month is surely enough to start with?

You'd best get used to not having £5k a week disposable then!

I'm only a few years older than you, but I decided many moons back that to pay for the things I wanted I had to make my own success!

It's certainly possible to make that much (or many multiples more) as many friends on PH have done, however none of them do it without putting in far more effort, stress blood sweat and tears than any of the professions I've already listed!

So if you're not prepared to put in the effort, you cant expect to enjoy the rewards!
Hello JameBeeston, - "ex socialite", owner of Ferrari F40 (as per profile), spill the beans on your secret - I would like you to state your educational qualifications, plus day job. Thanks.
You could earn a fortune teaching a course on manners and diplomacy?

Oh, wait......

An American investment banker was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellowfin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.

The Mexican replied, “only a little while. The American then asked why didn’t he stay out longer and catch more fish? The Mexican said he had enough to support his family’s immediate needs. The American then asked, “but what do you do with the rest of your time?”

The Mexican fisherman said, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siestas with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine, and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full and busy life.” The American scoffed, “I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat, you could buy several boats, eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing, and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually New York City, where you will run your expanding enterprise.”

The Mexican fisherman asked, “But, how long will this all take?”

To which the American replied, “15 – 20 years.”

“But what then?” Asked the Mexican.

The American laughed and said, “That’s the best part. When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions!”

“Millions – then what?”

The American said, “Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siestas with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos.”

If you don't mind working somewhere a bit iffy you could probably get a contract on that kind of money in the oil industry. I'm talking on-site Iraq or equivalent though. This time 18 months ago it would have been easy!

If you managed your tax affairs carefully you might manage it.

If you want to earn £5k a week why on earth did you go in to engineering? It's completely missing the point. The point of engineering is you will work damn hard, not get paid enough, and love every minute of it

Go into finance, be rich and (probably) miserable
