Does anyone use software to help set employee goals, manage performance and help document appraisals etc?

How big is your firm?

I'd expect basic functionality in the HR System, unless you are so small that employee development is likely to be far more informal than a software based solution could handle.

Roughly 20 of us.

At the moment I have a lever arch file full of papers and want to get something more streamlined!

For just 20 guys I'd honestly consider keeping it very very basic - you don't really need competency levels, job matching, skills gap analysis etc.

Putting in a system just to do appraisals I feel is overkill.

A job holder/role/skills pivot table in Excel would probably be enough for the planning side while recording the actual appraisals themselves is best done on paper I feel - laptops and computerised systems are really impersonal.

I totally agree.

My biggest issue is following up, providing feedback, goal setting and keeping track of the goals, plus keeping to strict times to have 121's.

As a small business something always gets in the way.

Holidays for example we had a good system in excel however didn't provide staff with quick access info for dates, issues with requested what first etc, we now have a really simple software (Whos Off) which isn't over kill but a massive help. Looking for something like that....

Maybe like you say something in excel would be better,

Well, we use Teamwork.com for tracking and that integrates for dates etc. Does recurring appointments and timeboxing.

Is not in any way an appraisal system (it's for project management really) but I suspect might cover the issues you have identified. Especially as it also links to Google Docs and any other link you like.
