Your wife needs to provide a service that makes her customers not want to go anywhere else. If her trade is dropping she clearly isn't doing that at the moment.
This to a small extent, but it does depend on how extreme their prices are in comparison? Surely a certain type of person wouldn't want to go to one of these dodgy competitors (I am imagining they are not plush?) - Can you target the upper market more? What type of area are you in?

How good is their product compared to yours?

Not really.

OP's wife runs a nail bar, not a boutique mergers and acquisitions consultancy.

The nature of the business is irrelevant, the same principles apply to all.

If as claimed by the OP the others are not paying relevant taxes or employing others illegally maybe she has to accept she won't be able to compete on price. She can either do nothing and watch the business die, offer something better/different that might retain her customers, or employ illegals herself as clearly that seems to work without no adverse consequences for her competitors.

It's a dog eat dog world out there you know.

I wouldn't recommend the last option.

It's not rocket science.

Anyway OP has disappeared so who cares.

Exactly, Business is about being the best option to the customer, whether that be in service, experience or price.

offer a service the others don't and couldn't easily. You now have a USP.

Make your shop look better and offer more pampering/ freebie bits to the experience. Your prices now don't seem so high as the service/experience is better. Your customers feel more looked after etc.

Another option, look into getting an on site alcohol license, start offering bubbly and do proms, weekend nights out packages, weddings etc etc. Then expand and start doing hair and makeup too...after that, you can take over the world of beauty salons!

Well...something like that.
