Wetherspoons have a market leading business model. They open many for breakfasts (can you imagine a pub doing that many years ago?) which is dead time for all other pubs. Plus they have huge economies of scale and buy cheaply (I heard) beers just before they go out of date because they know they can sell it through all their outlets.

Plenty of posh pubs near me that are full a lot of the time but the town centre ones are shockingly dead for most of the week.

With beer approaching £5 a pint though I can see that more pubs are on the way out.
Why would breweries be making so much surplus beer they can fulfil JDW's demand for "almost out of date" beer?

They might've started out like that but with the number of outlets they have now it's just impossible for this urban myth to be true.

Beer at a busy JDW pub is probably the freshest in the country because of the volume they get through.

I pass a pub called the Betsey Wynne in Swanbourne (Bucks) every day on the way to the shop. It was for sale a while back and has been bought by a small group that has a dozen or so pubs in the area. Closed for refurbishment (not much wrong with it when I was last there) and a whole stload of money is being spent.

Just talking about McDonalds - slightly off topic (but it's been mentioned earlier in the thread) - the Maccy D's in Haverfordwest has it's own Brown tourist signs! Shall we go to Carew Castle or Maccy D's? Maccy D's it is then!! No wonder it does so well smile
