I know of a small chain of 3 for sale if you want to jump in

The numbers aren’t as good as your OP points to: v.high rents for good sites

I’d say they are a licence to lose money.

Every mall I go in the juice bar opens and closes pretty soon after.

The KFC, Mac Donald’s, Burger King etc are packed.

Alas health is not a priority with most.

They've had one in Guildford for ages. Seems to be working.

Like anything though, what you pay may seem a lot until you have to consider, set up costs, running costs, tax etc. It's just an expensive way to buy drinks. Its not unlike spending £7 on a glass of wine knowing you can buy a bottle for that (or similar).

£2.50 is a reasonable price to pay imo. Actual just squeezed juice is far better than any pre packed bottle.

On a similar note, there is a 'shake shack' near me and very close to a large school.
Nice steady turnover of ice cream based err....smoothies.

It's not really even healthy though is it as these drinks are packed full of sugar (albeit natural rather than processed).

You can't compare huge global businesses with your own juice bar. There are many that, I am sure, are very successful but KFC, Maccy's have honed their marketing and products over decades and also cater for a wide range of tastes. However there are a lot of people out there who do consider their health more seriously...

In which case they will be avoiding juice bars...

Really, why's that?
Because humans are not designed to consume calories in the form of drink (taken in addition to 'normal' food)

For the most part they've evolved to eat veg, fruit, grains and small amounts of meat.

I'd love to see a definition of " normal" food wink
I note you've missed the bit about evolving to drink calories in the form of smoothied fruit.

Normal food would be whatever you eat to get through the day. If you then consume hundreds of calories in the form of fructose on a regular basis, it really won't end well.

Juice bars are fine as an occasional thing. I really wouldn't recommend using them thinking their in some way healthy.

It sort doesn't matter about whether this is fruit or not and whether you should consume it or not. People see smoothies as a healthy option and that's why there are successful smoothies bars out there.

So such places could do well as long as they are in areas where at least some of the people give a flying fk about healthy options.

As always with retail businesses, it's location and location and so on and so forth.

Come to think of it, Joe and the Juice is doing well. They have dozens of branches aging which many in international locations

I love their business model. Buy fruit that is about to go rotten and is therefore completely loaded with sugar. Blitz with a bit of other fruit. Sell for £4-6.

I posted about Joe and the Juice on here a month ago, yup, they seem to be doing well.

Was full of women when I went, so an alternative meeting point to a coffee shop for them i think.

For a dedicated shop, yes.

But you also see stalls and stands in shopping centres with queues.

What's wrong with fructose?
In terms of the chemistry please. If you are an md you should know the answer.

I wouldn't expect someone with a degree in medicine to know about the intricacies of fructose metabolism, unless they had a special interest in it of course.

All the Juice bars I have ever seen seem to be short lived affairs. People might try it once, get all worked up about paying 3quid for a cup of juice when they could've bought 1.5litres at the supermarket and never bother again.

There's a gelato emporium set up in a busy retail spot near me that just does ice creams, coffee and desserts. Took the kids once and it was pretty nice to be fair but it was a novelty and I wouldn't make a point of going back.

I'm out btw.
