The software industry is DELIGHTED with these developments.

I can't think why.

It's ridiculous isn't it. What's the issue with the current online process, has HMRC ever said? I'm struggling to think what the advantage is for them.

Any response from the HoL review?

Some of the industry are and some aren't. There were certainly some very unhappy developers at the meeting I attended. Some accounting firms are also delighted. Take PWC for example. Not a firm you would usually see targeting small businesses.

It has a lot to do with their IT strategy.: https://hmrcdigital.blog.gov.uk/2016/02/12/our-vis...

For those of us below the £85k threshold, can we continue to file online via the HMRC web portal after April?

For one year only (as per the current plans).

I assume HMRC have ignored the HOL recommendation to delay for those above the threshold.

You assume correctly, so far at least. No surprise there! Further plans to extend MTD have been delayed for now - Brexit to blame apparently, so not all bad news...

I've been looking into this since I will file my VAT this way now.

In a nut shell the software I've been using for 20 years (yes it's old, but it does all I need) is not compliant and it will not be updated to be so, so I have to use one of the approved applications.

But you can't buy any of these approved applications, you have to rent them. At least I can't find one that you can buy. And the going rate is about £150 - £200 a year, every year.

So it's going to cost me £200 or so every year from now on, i.e. an expensive I did not have before.

It reeks of a massive backhander for someone in Government here.

Do you currently file the VAT return manually using the data from your software?

The software I used (Dosh/Marmot Cashbook) produces the VAT figures. Then I just use the HMRC webfilling page and enter the numbers.

Thanks, I shall have a look and see what I think. The thing that really annoys me is the renting of the software. In my line of work (industrial control system software), end clients will not accept renting of off-the-shelf packages.

I had a look at Quickbooks and it's very good, but it does way more than I need.

Okay.

This appears the simplest I have found. You will just need to type the relevant totals in a excel spreadsheet, then copy/paste to the web filer.

Cost is £40 pa.

That looks like just the thing I need. I've watched the video, and it does just what I need.

In fact, I'm going to cough up my £40 and submit my VAT return as it's due at the end of the month.

Thanks for your help !

Yes. I was a bit hasty looking at the £200 pa options. Because I don't need all those extra things when I only issue a few invoices a year and there's only me. Thanks.

Are you trading over or under the VAT threshold?

If under, you don't have to file digitally yet.

Just over. Oddly, this year will be under because I worked part of the year as staff. But I fully expect to be over it from now on. So I might as well do it now and then it's done with.

HMRC are currently saying "bridging software" which allows you to transfer speadsheet data to a submission compatible format is just a temporary concession. They really do want you to buy proper software before too long.
