Send me some info?

I have two small Vat registered companies. I did my last return this week online still allowed to use the old system, I don't think this will be okay next time. Cheers Mark.

Are either of your companies trading under the £85,000 12 month threshold?

Fair enough - no escape for you then smile

Although if you are a state body or a QUANGO, you can get a temporary exemption even if your turnover is in the millions.

Success.

I've just had confirmation from HMRC that my existing VAT clients are now registered for VAT MTD. The proof of the pudding will be when I go to submit the actual returns.

The next set of tasks will be centered on sorting out those clients who I DON'T Currently submit VAT returns for but who may want me to start filing on their behalf. I'll try to get as many as possible to sort VAT MTD out at their end but already I've had a few request that I take over their VAT affairs because of MTD.

Hi Eric

If you are under £85K can you still use the older interface without the need for bridging?

If you are under 85K you don't have to use MTD, but there will be a replacement for the portal available in August. After that point I would expect all of the accounts to move to the new system and the old portal to be switched off.

So I signed up and got this from HMRC so presumably just trot off to my accounts software and click the MTD button?!

Sign up complete
Dear Customer
You’ve signed up to use software to submit your VAT Returns.
What happens next
1. Choose relevant third party software.
2. Allow your software to submit VAT Returns to HMRC. You might need to sign in with your Government Gateway details.
3. Use software to record your sales and purchases.
4. Submit your VAT Returns before your deadlines.

That's about the gist of it, I've been a long terms QB user since 1996, but I was using QB 2008, so a little out of date for MTD. I have decided to take a clean sheet approach and have switched to Xero (my accountants preferred choice) for my year starting April 2019.

One additional thing to note before you submit your return is that you may need to adjust the MTD conversion date in the accounts software, mine popped up with Jun 1st as I did all the setting up in June, I had to change this to April 1st to generate the correct VAT return.

Anyone reading who needs to sign up for April-June should note that the deadline for signing up is over a week before the deadline for filing (if you have a direct debit). I haven't tried to work out the date taking into account the 72 hours and the direct debit issue, but it won't be that long now.

Obviously people who don't sign up can still use the portal and I don't expect anyone to be fined for not doing it yet.

I'd edit and remove that address, publishing it in free format text is a great way of increasing your spam count.

It is quite widely available. Hence I don't mind publishing it. When I was an MP I got a ton of entirely legitimate email to handle. Hence even including a certain amount of spam I don't actually get that much email to handle now and am quite relaxed about publishing the email. I do have a spam filter, but even that does not get that much spam.

According to the Digital Relationship Management Team at HMRC the cut off is 15 working days before the filing date. There is also a period of 7 working days after the filing date that you can't sign up.

I signed up for the last quarter and despite the Direct Debit not changing, HMRC didn't take my last quarters VAT, just noticed while prepping this quarters. Have logged into HMRC website and Direct Debit hasn't been cancelled, checked with bank too and not cancelled that side. HMRC wasn't chasing the payment either. I've paid it manually, hopefully this quarters will work.

At the moment MTD = Making Tax Difficult.

The filing date is the last date for filing rather than the actual filing date (it links to when the DD is taken). This cut off relates particularly to people with DDs. That information is, however, out of date.

This is the current situation (from HMRC): (which I have had confirmed from them as being accurate)

When to sign up
If you do not pay by Direct Debit, sign up at least 72 hours before your return is due.

If you pay by Direct Debit, sign up at least 7 working days before or 5 working days after your return is due. Make sure your last Direct Debit has come out of your bank account before signing up.
Obvoiusly there still is time now, but as we go out of the weekend coming into Monday it starts being a bit difficult timing wise.
