JPW P1 - worth fixing?
Discussion
I was given a set of speakers some years back - and really like the sound out of them - moved house the other day - dusted then down and I see both cones are split where they join the foam..
Googled them - and it would seem they are a respected old speaker - seems to be £150 to replace the drivers.
Are they worth it?
Or do I spend £150 on a newer secondhand equivalent? If so what would the newer equivalent be???
Thanks in advance for any advice!!

I once repaired a split cone on a Cerwin Vega using Rizlas and [slightly] watered down wood glue. Gradually built up a few layers of papers in the area of the split.
The speaker was one of a pair we used for discos, parties etc and it was driven hard.
The repair lasted supremely well, for as long as we kept those units.
Might be worth a try before you decide whether to replace both drivers.

Superb speakers and well worth fixing - you wont buy better for £150.
Replacement surrounds are easy to come by and are not difficult to fit if you have a steady hand and a couple of free evenings. Personally I always cut the dust cap off and shim the voice coil as well, as it as it makes for a more reliable and consistent result.
Plenty of places will sell you the necessary surrounds, dust caps, shims and glue (I usually use Good Hi-Fi in the Netherlands, personally) and there are plenty of videos online to show you how to do it.

Interesting that old split drivers would be worth some money - suppose there would be an originality value to them.
Now I've started looking at Gumtree turntables...
All I have is an old K1 signature Marantz amp and a fairly recent Arcam DAC which I use to play full fat Spotify - which I think sounds fine given how useable Spotify is
But I also want to be able to play my old and small but specific record collection - seen a Project Essential II with pre amp - looks new - £120.. mmm

Just got a service bill for my bike of £750!! So might have a go at repairing after all - i’ll Google the shiming thing - bound to learn something from the process - will report back in due course
Boultons are very good, and reasonably priced too. Will be able to sort for £50ish by the looks of things, might be worth a call. http://www.audioloudspeakers.co.uk/boultons.shtmlNew units can still be sourced in a couple of places.

I’ve ordered new foam surrounds - £20 inc glue and shipping - lots of detailed instructions around - centring everything seems to be the key.
Lots of chat about capping the tweeter or something in audio land - which might be a step too far as I assume i’ll have to do some soldering - will see what it all looks like when I open them up - also putting steel plate inside the box..

No they're not - from personal experience I recommend you avoid them like the plague.WelshChris said:

Definitely a post for the "audiophile bullst" thread Deranged Rover said:

OK, fair enough...…..you had a bad experience; the work they did for me was good. It was specialised production work involving a couple of hundred subwoofer drivers...…..not a domestic job.Gassing Station | Home Cinema & Hi-Fi | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
