I was given a set of speakers some years back - and really like the sound out of them - moved house the other day - dusted then down and I see both cones are split where they join the foam..

Googled them - and it would seem they are a respected old speaker - seems to be £150 to replace the drivers.

Are they worth it?

Or do I spend £150 on a newer secondhand equivalent? If so what would the newer equivalent be???

Thanks in advance for any advice!!

I once repaired a split cone on a Cerwin Vega using Rizlas and [slightly] watered down wood glue. Gradually built up a few layers of papers in the area of the split.

The speaker was one of a pair we used for discos, parties etc and it was driven hard.

The repair lasted supremely well, for as long as we kept those units.

Might be worth a try before you decide whether to replace both drivers.

Interesting - it’s quite a long split - 12 - 2.30 ish around the cone edge - no real loss in trying I suppose!

If you're not bothered about originality, you can buy generic replacement foam rings for £very little.

Superb speakers and well worth fixing - you wont buy better for £150.

Replacement surrounds are easy to come by and are not difficult to fit if you have a steady hand and a couple of free evenings. Personally I always cut the dust cap off and shim the voice coil as well, as it as it makes for a more reliable and consistent result.

Plenty of places will sell you the necessary surrounds, dust caps, shims and glue (I usually use Good Hi-Fi in the Netherlands, personally) and there are plenty of videos online to show you how to do it.

Looks like a bit of a job! - this one is a clean rip along the foam - the other one is the same but has a tear in the cone as well

A classic problem by the looks of the YouTube video’s

I might just go all out and replace with new

Fair enough, but if you do replace them, please don't throw them out. Offer them up on eBay/Gumtree/wherever - someone will grab them and save them, and you'll get a few quid back

Interesting that old split drivers would be worth some money - suppose there would be an originality value to them.

Now I've started looking at Gumtree turntables...

All I have is an old K1 signature Marantz amp and a fairly recent Arcam DAC which I use to play full fat Spotify - which I think sounds fine given how useable Spotify is

But I also want to be able to play my old and small but specific record collection - seen a Project Essential II with pre amp - looks new - £120.. mmm

The split drivers aren't worth any money but they can be repaired! I've restored many pairs of speakers like this - some in far worse condition.

There are plenty of online videos which explain the replacement process. Good luck.

Boultons are very good, and reasonably priced too. Will be able to sort for £50ish by the looks of things, might be worth a call. http://www.audioloudspeakers.co.uk/boultons.shtml

New units can still be sourced in a couple of places.

I’ve ordered new foam surrounds - £20 inc glue and shipping - lots of detailed instructions around - centring everything seems to be the key.

Lots of chat about capping the tweeter or something in audio land - which might be a step too far as I assume i’ll have to do some soldering - will see what it all looks like when I open them up - also putting steel plate inside the box..

They were designed to a High efficiency Speaker for Valve amps or low output A class amps. A dealer in Harrogate used to match them with Sugden A25 amps or the Audio Innovations S300. Basically a poor mans Snell K.

No they're not - from personal experience I recommend you avoid them like the plague.

I wouldn't have put the Vega units in the audiophile category, but the repair was long lasting and didn't seem to result in any degradation in sound quality - not for the use we put them to, anyway music

OK, fair enough...…..you had a bad experience; the work they did for me was good. It was specialised production work involving a couple of hundred subwoofer drivers...…..not a domestic job.

Not sure if this is going to work!

'Borrowed' a set of old 90's floor standing ruark templar's while I fix them

Not convinced they sound as nice as the JPW's...
