My unit would definitely qualify for SBRR (1000sq ft on a farm) but it was only completed last July and hasn't been rated yet. I've written off to the valuations people and to my local council but not heard anything yet (not that I'm expecting to) hopefully they will be making some provision for people in my situation.
Im in the same situation as yourself with a 1600sqft old farm building that has never been rated.
You should be able still to claim as you were in occupation on 11th march2020
I'd like to think so, but there was a point made earlier (I thought it was in this thread but can't find it now) about being on the register at that time, and of course I wasn't.
If the delay is due to the valuation officer i would argue that you shoulf be ok

If that happens i can help draft an appeal for you

That would be very decent of you, thanks, I'll let you and this thread know how I get on if and when I get a response. I've emailed my council and the Valuation office.

among the things I don't know is whose responsibility it is to report the creation of a new rateable premises, occupier or landlord? The lease make me responsible for the rates and I had assumed that in due course I would get a bill on which I would then claim Small Business Rates Relief as it's a small unit and my only premises.

There must be a number of small businesses in the same boat, being the boat in which there's small businesses that have been adversely affected by what's going on and yet unable to easily access the intended help. For instance, people who have only recently started out as self employed and don't have three year's accounts.

Would have thought owner is responsible

Also the council should have inspectors to see it going up or changing use

Sure we can get it soryed sorted even

Just put in my application yesterday afternoon to Fife council. Said they would aim to pay within 10 working days of receiving the application.

Are these grants taxable income? Will be a kick in the nuts to have 29% of it taken away immediately.
Have just had my application approved this morning. They said I should receive payment this coming week.

Quite impressed how quick and easy the process was.

Nervous as the principle trade of my business is manufacture of appliances for the fast food industry however we also sell spare parts, service and repair said appliances.

99% of my customers have closed as have most if not all of my suppliers so we shut up shop earlier in the week in line with government recommendations as we couldn’t keep staff and customers safe.

As we aren’t strictly in the hospitality industry, although we exclusively supply to this industry, I’m worried that my business won’t qualify for the rate holiday or the government grant.

I’ve emailed the local council but as the grant will be the difference between survival and shutting up shop meaning redundancies.

Do direct suppliers of hospitality industry qualify for the grant?

Not as such from what i have seen unfortunately.

Your council should be able to offer you a payment holiday which should help

What is the RV of your premises?

I believe he’s in Scotland.
In England it’s my understanding that LA’s will contact those that are eligible. Those that they deem aren’t will not be contacted.

When you say ‘based on vo descriptions etc’ are you going only on the VO register that we can all access or from business rate bills issued by your authority as well?

If they get SBRR or retail relief we use that info alone

Vo description is forthe new categories they add each day as its the only indocation we have as to what business is being carried out

So now harrods will get enhanced reTail relief so nothing to pay

Also 25k grant... Unless they breach state aid rules

Where i work we have already stopped all DDs being called forthe cases i have identified until june 2020 and reproflied cash payers so nothing will be psid until may

Tomorrows job is to identify liquidated companies

Hope to have helpef

You have.
Thank you.

eta.
My brother’s valuation on VOA says ‘workshops and premises’.
Will he qualify?

Does he get sbrr or retail relief in 19 20?

Does he do retail sales to the general public?

Sbrr yes. £11000 ish rateable value.
Retail sales - he does restoration so provides a service to the public which he gets paid for.

Thanks

eta that ‘retail’ is not mentioned on his bill. I don’t think! Apparently says ‘workshops and premises’ on VO register - not sure about actual rates bill issued by the LA.
