"Some 7.4 million UK adults are still struggling to pay bills due to the high cost of living, a survey suggests."

If anyone wondered why the plebs aren't larging it in rainy Cornwall this week.
Plenty of Brits at the airport when I came though the other day. The easyJet crowd too, so clearly it can’t be that bad.

If you've never flown on a cheap budget flight and had a pint of lager with a full english in the airport, are you even British?

Presumably while checking their GIA's post bed and ISA whilst bemoaning the new CGT limit and personal allowance reductions as is exactly what the common or garden average wage Brit is concerned over at this time of year........

Wasn’t it Notting Hill that had more capital gains than Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle combined? hehe

Retail is a funny one. Takings a few Saturday's ago £220. Takings this Saturday just under £20. Before anyone says "£220 is that all" we've only been open a few months, and the place has minimal overheads. Even so, can't quite get why some days are buzzing and other days dying...

When I had a high street shop it was no different - you always had that day, or week when it was beyond quiet. Days/week when It’d of been cheaper to have not opened the doors. That aside, retail (online) has been dreadful this past week. I know it’s Easter, and usually is quiet(er), but this is abnormally quiet. Losing money quiet. The odd day/week is absorbable, it’s when it rolls into months you have to really start worrying eek

Are minimal overheads sustainable? Is £220 sustainable/ what is the required break even on that?

What do you do?
If it’s one bloke cutting hair, that’s a living.
If it’s selling stuff with a 25% POR, then yeah not great.

Doesn’t really matter what thread you post in - you always come across as thinking you are better than everyone else - pretty bold for a guy that lives in a semi detached house.

Ha - new account - however the looking down one’s nose that okgo pollutes a number of threads with reminded why I deleted my previous account.

Absolutely tiresome snobbery.

Stationers selling all kinds of gifts made by local crafters, arts & crafts supplies, kids toys and games. In a rural Aberdeenshire village (albeit on an A-road). We own the building outright (a former bank), my other business is already paying utilities (using the other rooms than the main shop / ex-bank hall), and my wife (who created the business and runs it) doesn't need to draw a salary from it yet.

Don't say "wrong type of business for the location". We know thats probably true. But we're part of a growing cluster of village shops doing different things (including a big antiques shop) and we're all trying to grow together. We either try and operate retail businesses in our villages or we accept they are dead. Village has a lot going for it, we've got cash we can invest and less pressing need to make a viable living from it immediately, so lets give it a go.

We stopped at a few interesting little shops when we did the NC500, Scotland seems to embrace these and it makes the villages. Well done and keep it up, I hope it wipes its face or even makes a profit in the future.

My neighbour who I set up selling cremation caskets is flat out, however it’s very mixed bunch with some being very busy and others quiet.

Very random.

Odd how some businesses are flying, some are struggling.

All would say folks is you never know what’s around the corner (having been at the very sharp end of Covid business lockdown) and I’m now saving much more than I spend.

That doesn’t mean I don’t spend, it means I’m more careful and spend my money wisely!
