Basically i need an intercom so that a customer can speak to staff on the other side of the door.

It needs to be wall mounted each side, and look decent.

It needs to be operating all the time, the customer must not have to press a button to speak to the staff on the other side.
Its for a Covid test trailer so they can't have everybody touching the same button! I guess a mute button on the staff side would be beneficial.

Its essentially a wall mounted baby monitor that we want!

But cannot find anything suitable from a google etc

Can anyone suggest anything?

Cheers!

As you are not pressing a button to speak - then a monitor sounds right - and you can get 2-way baby monitors...
baby end on the outside, parent end inside - if it looks too amateur then mount it in a thin plywood box painted black with a grill in it - cable through the trailer to plug it in...

Is it recurring customers? If so something like this might work

Yes i did have the thought of getting a painted aluminium box made with a grill and a baby monitor inside. But it feels all a bit st.....

What i am after must exist as a product! It just needs a microphone and a speaker each end...

Unfortunately they have been promised an intercom, but no one has checked said device to the specification required actually exists!

the nearest you will get is the systems they had in banks - so what you want is a dual way counter microphone...
you might need two...
plenty on ebay: e.g.

Thanks, after googling "counter microphone" i have now come across this which looks almost ideal!

Looks like someone else has seen a product gap and made this for Covid!

https://www.soundservices.co.uk/product/voicebridg...

The only thing is the cables come out of the bottom on show, would prefer them to come out the back to be hidden.
My boss has severe OCD and know he will moan about that!

The other thing is it looks like its activated via infra-red, apparently 1 in 200 people will be in a wheel-chair, so hopefully they will be able to get close enough for it to activate.

But certainly seems to best product i can find.

Timings may not be right for you, but DoorBird announced a handsfree doorentry system last month.

https://www.doorbird.com/en/blog

The advantage of these is there is no need for anything your side other than a phone or tablet and the door release can be trigger from within the unit.

Not as cheap but certainly more elegant.
