My M6 is in for its big service today including vehicle check. The car has been driven 8 miles. Is this normal?
Doesn't sound OTT for a road test .... why don't you ask them, it might be part of the service? As its not a Friday, you can assume it wasn't used for the fish and chip run.

Long time lurker here! Would be interested in replies, recently dropped off my approved used M135i for a planned service with a few niggles including an oil leak. These were sorted out on warranty, but was surprised to see car had been driven 30 miles... Don't have any hidden dash cams, trackers etc. to check the speeds/where it's been driven. Generally excellent dealership so I let them off, I suspect if challenged their defense would be driving the car vigorously to ensure no ongoing leakage? (and an excellent reason for the technician to drive something a bit exciting than a 4 pot diesel!).
If we just carry out a service then for us they go in and out of the workshop, if we carry out disc's and pads or a full service or any diagnostic work then we tend to cover 9 miles. If its DPF related then it can be 30- 40 miles.
I guess it depends what it was in for but i personally wouldn't consider it an issue.

I put my car in to the main dealers for a warranty repair on the brakes a few weeks ago on a Friday morning.
I had a call late morning to say they needed a part and it would not be ready until the following Monday and the car needed to stay with them as it would be unsafe to drive. A bit inconvenient but not a major problem as i have another car to use.
Checked the tracker app on my phone over the weekend to find that the car had been used to pop to the local shops a few miles away in the afternoon!
There was an interesting conversation with the manager when i picked it up...

From my own experience of working in a dealer - not many techs would get excited about driving an m135 - they are fairly run of the mill, and unless you are really putting your foot down they don’t feel much more special than other 1 series. Techs will generally be more interested in getting through their jobs as quick as possible to boost their bonus at the end of the monthSomething really interesting like an old z3m breadvan, z8 or e30 m3 etc might make them forget about their bonus for a few minutes
I dropped my Evo off for a service one Saturday in my madder days and went for a wonder to the local McDonald’s for a breakfast to kill time. Half an hour into this, I saw my car being driven sideways round the roundabout.
I did not need to pay for the service, including new discs and pads all round....!!!!

Mine didnt get driven far, but I did spot it coming sideways out of the junction as I returned to collect it !
I once drove off the forecourt sideways in a loaner 645i (unintentionally) whilst the salesman looked on, he called me up and said that's the first time I've seen that happen... As for the OP I think they're being very precious it's not a 250 GTO.
