I am organising the Beer Tent at a fete in a fortnights time.

Even pre-pandemic there were people wanting to make faced payments. I see that there are cheap chip & pin machines on Amazon, Toolstation, https://store.sumup.com/en-GB/product-selection?pr... etc.

How does it work? Can anyone buy one set up an account and just take card payments?

Hi,

Can't speak for SumUp but Square is very easy to set up and use:

https://squareup.com/gb/en/hardware/reader

It pairs with your ipad (possibly other tablets & phones) and allows you to take money either by entering an amount or choosing from a (pre-entered) list of items & prices (in which case it totals the items for you)

Money appears on you bank minus 1.5%(ish)

I'd be surprised if sumup wasn't much the same.

My wife organises events for a small specialist interest club, she uses iZettle (I think now owned by Paypal)

https://www.zettle.com/gb

From what I've seen, you register your bank account with your account, and then link the card reader to your phone which you then use the app to process payments. Pretty simple, I don't think they charge a monthly fee, just a very small commission on transactions.

Another vote for iZettle here. Very easy to get set up & start using, no monthly fee they just take 1.75% per transaction.
The actual hardware itself is well made & pretty robust.
