How are HMRC able to detect an under payment of £200 from 9 years ago? Do they have people who pull out random files from the last 30 years or something and review them?

Or have they fixed some broken algorithm in a computer program that was undercharging for decades?

Surely if it has been and gone a few years ago then that is that ?

I also received a letter stating I owe then nearly £200 from 3 years ago for paye, I will look into it sometime this week as I think we paid it.
Obviously someone has a new task to find lots of non payments

Seriously, I wouldn't argue with HMRC over £200. Quicker, cheaper and easier to just pay it.

Normal time-frame is 6 years but they can go back as far as they like if they suspect fraud etc. I wouldn't even want to start thinking about that for £200.

If its £200 on the dot, It sounds fishy to me.

Could it be a fake? Does it have a dodgy link or phone number to ring?

That's probably what they are hoping. scratchchin

The Office of Tax Simplification is definitely sitting doing nothing because it was abolished in Kwasi Kwertang's "non-Budget" Budget.
Can’t do nothing (or sit) if you don’t exist.

It doesn't need paying. The entity no longer exists.

There won't be any thought into it. It'll have been reviewed by a computer and a notice is sent out. Like I said previously, just advise the entity no longer exists.

But why didn't the computer pick this up ten years ago? Have they fixed a compute bug or what? What has changed that ten years ago no tax was owed but then today £200 is owed?

You're talking about HMRC. Literally any stupidity is possible. A client had a car benefit added to his coding notice a few years ago. When I phoned up to correct it, HMRC said the system accidentally copied it over from a previous year. The previous year was 6 years earlier...

I can only assume you're right. Last year I received a cheque out of the blue from HMRC for nearly £500. I have no idea why. I have an accountant that does my SA and I am paid up to date etc. I have had odd demands in the past for trifling amounts and paid them but again no idea why.

I have spent many days if not weeks of my life on the phone to HMRC regarding personal, VAT and business taxes and simply do not have the will to join the endless on hold queue again to find out the story re these matters. I have to say the staff are always helpful and fair when I do get through but by Christ their systems are designed to push you over the edge!

They claim it's PAYE owed by the employer. Some of it is interest from 2014.
Is it unpaid tax or just a late/non-filing penalty? Could be 2 x £100 late or non-filing penalties for monthly PAYE returns.

Is there an 0300 200 xxxx phone number on the letter? I presume the letter has a PAYE reference number on it somewhere?

Been there; done that.

Last November I was on hold for half an hour before giving up and writing to them instead, asking for a tax calculation they had failed to send despite having sent the resultant tax demand.

No answer.

Phoned them on 20th February and was assured they would send the calculation, although it might take 14 days to arrive.

Nothing received.

Wrote to them again yesterday (28 March) pointing out the above attempts to get the information and asking again for the calculation which they obviously have but simply haven't sent....

Do you have an online personal tax account? You can view all the statements and calculations available on there, literally copies of letters [allegedly] sent out.

Regrettably that solution isn't available because it's not personal Self Assessment. HMRC helpfully say that online access is possible but "you will have to go out and buy appropriate software to interface with HMRC".

If only life was easy. Well, it would be if HMRC actually did what they're supposed to do!

What tax are you trying to get sorted?

Thanks for the question. It's just income tax but don't worry, I'm on it. If only our friends at HMRC felt a similar level of commitment...

It is a real st show at the moment. It's taken almost a whole year to get pension contribution tax relief refunded for a few of our clients, with no timescales being quoted at all, not even a ridiculous one like 6 months. It's really living up to the tired old stereotype of 'they are quick enough to chase you for money but hold on to it forever when they owe you', and the only possible way we've found to progress things slightly is to be quite forceful and start the ball rolling with filing a formal complaint.

Some departments are still struggling in the wake of Covid, where thousands of workers were pulled away from their usual duties and huge backlogs of 'normal' work piled up. Companies House and the Office of Public Guardian are just as bad.

Actually, we recently also had a PAYE penalty letter for a client and their Partnership setup. That Partnership however, ceased to be used more than 5 years ago now, and HMRC have just pulled these penalties out the hat.
