Work hard, be straight, value good people, and do everything you can to work with decent people.
Pay your bills, first, before you pay yourself. Make sure your suppliers, workers etc are all OK. Be responsible with the money, look after it, make sure you don't spend it until you have it.

Never ever ever not take responsibility for mistakes and errors. Behave properly. If the business fails at least have the respect of people around you that you didn't take them down with you.

Don't overthink it. If you do, you won't do something. Just do it, but do it small, see if it works, and if it does, do it bigger, and if it works do it bigger again.

Value good people, but get rid of bad ones. Dishonesty and poor timekeeping, and avoiding responsibility are a drain on the business, and should be ruthlessly cut out. Hard work, but necessary.

Have fun, and don't let it overtake your life.

Don't work cheap. Good people don't expect something for nothing, and customers are part of the 'work with good people' mantra.

I had a very wise company secretary, he recommended reviewing management accounts monthly, which meant you had a real grasp of outstanding invoices, cash flow, costs etc, and allows action to be taken before they becomes a drastic problem

First and foremost your business is there to make money, if something does not make money dont do it.
If you can avoid spending money on advertising do so and if you must then make sure it brings in more profit than it costs.

Develop systems and automate as much as you can. Zapier, Flow, Calday or https://calendly-alternatives.org/, etc. It'll make you spend less time on boring repetitive stuff. And I want to be able to focus more on the money-generating things like finding clients and optimizing materials.

Depends on the business, and "local" competition. I've been running my business for 26 years. I used to have a free Yellow Pages listing, now just have a free Google Business listing. The only time I've paid for advertising was when Yellow Pages convinced me to try Yell.com for 2 years. It didn't work.

Got more work than I can comfortably handle, so turning skme customers away.

Never stop learning. Keep up with the time. Use modern technologies to automate the working process. I personally went for ecommerce api integration. It helps help my systems share data and information, and manage and update my product catalog. To be honest, I understand that running a business without using such tools was much more difficult in the past.
And of course, it is important to find a balance between work and personal life to perform well in your different responsibilities and just be satisfied with your life.

That was not what I wrote, so perhaps attention to detail is required.
When I started my business in the last millennium a chum who had a large business said to me, I spend £120,000 a year on advertising, if I had the balls I would stop all but the 20% I spend on Yellow pages.
