The calculation of CGT on share sales is VERY complicated. I have software that can do it for me but it is specialist (and expensive) and is part of an overall self assessment package that I use professionally.
The problem with CGT on share dealings is that the calculation rules have changed many times over the 40 year history of CGT and you need to be aware of ALL the various permutations of these rules depending on the dates of acquistion/purcghase and disposal of the various shares.

I found this website that claims to calculate CGT - it's a bit basic, but it seems to work very well.

That looks like it might do the trick - although I see that it doesnt go back further than 1998. That could be problematic if you were selling shares acquired before that date.
Don't forget that if your total Capital Gains in the tax year are below £8,500 (2005/06), they are ignored for CGT purposes anyway.

Does the www.cgtcalculator.com site work OK. Ive a lot of trades to go through so it would be useful to know if anyone else has tired it.
