The deadline for filing your self assessment return will be 30/11/08 for the 2007/08 tax year (or 30/09/08 if you still do it manually).

This will have a very big impact on accountancy firms. At present you have tax staff sitting around without much to do for February-April. This will now extend to include November & December.

It also has implications for holiday plans of such staff.

by manually do you mean not filed online or do you mean if you want the IR to calculate tax and ammend code etc.

Not impressed tbh, does this also change tax payments due dates? If not, I presume this is to allow them time to send out statements etc and be in a better position to chase outstanding amounts more quickly?

I mean any sort of manual return, whether you have calculated the tax due or not.

I knew this was on the cards although I hadn't expected it to happen so soon.

There is a little bit more about it on the ACCA website. I don't remember Brown asking the accounting institutes or practicioners for their views on this.

It should make interesting reading in the accounting press over the next few months.

I think my fees will be increasing in line with the pressure

Lots of accountants taking winter breaks from 2008 on too.
