I think the best piece of advice anyone can give you is to seek out an accountant.

Okay it will cost you, but someone with all the facts may be able to help you considerably.

I've seen people come here with the IR looming over them for unpaid tax, non submission of returns etc, only to find out that they are due a repayment. Not saying it's going to be the same for you, but professional help wouldn't be the worst thing you could do.
